: , Seven Two-Year-Olds to Meet In Lansing Stakes at Detroit * Old Tom, Winner of Three Of Four Starts, Tops Field For Todays 0,000 Event FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 17. — The 0,000 added Lansing Stakes, a five-furlong allowance event for two-year-old colts and geldings is to occupy the spotlight tomorrow at this spacious Motor City racing grounds. Although the Lansing drew a list of 24 nominations when it closed on May 7, injuries* to several of the more prominent candidates cut the probable starting band down to seven youngsters, all of whom trained for the dash at the local course. Headed by O. P. Woodwards homebred colt, Old Tom, a son of Omission and Dame Mariechen, the Lansing field will consist of Thomas Grays Oil Capitol, who is to race coupled with Old Tom; Joseph A. Goodwins homebred Donke Serenade, Henry Forrests Cross Wise, M; C. Haddix Air Arm, Mrs. O. C. Neumanns Bully Boy, and Theodore D. Buhls Bowled Over. Under the allowance conditions of the Lansing, all the entrants with the single exception of Donke Serenade are to shoulder 114 pounds, while the Goodwin colt, a maiden and second-time starter, gets in under 110 pounds. Old Tom, victor in three of four engagements during his" brief career, has shown unusual speed on several occasions and the Woodward colts top performances were registered at the recent Churchill Downs meeting. Old Tom won a five furlongs allowance race at that oval in :59%, defeating the Debutante Stakes victress, Aunt Jayne Z. Scored in Bashford Manor After that success, Old Tom beat a crack field in the renewal of the Bashford Manor Stakes, important Kentucky juvenile fixture. The Woodward youngster also won his graduation diploma early in the Keene-land season and then finished sixth, back of Black Sambo, Wisconsin Boy, and Mystery Man in the Lafayette Stakes, which was decided on a sloppy strip and not to the liking of the son of Omission. Trainer Harry Trotsek, who is to saddle Old Tom for the Lansing, also will put the tack on Oil Capitol. The latter colt, a gray son of the mighty Mahmoud and Never Again II., was beaten off in the Bashford Manor Stakes but, previous to that encounter, he turned back Curtice, Spurchase, Kalimera, and other two-year-olds of class in an allowance event at the Downs. Bully Boy, a Coldstream Stud-bred son of Bull Dog and Farmerette, and Donke Serenade met here last Saturday in a five furlongs dash and Bully Boy was a driving winner over a fair field. Running time for the race was :59% and Donke Serenade, who was near the pace for the initial three furlongs, lost his chance when he bore out badly ,at the stretch turn. One of the real Lansing threats is Cross Wise, a seasoned colt, the get of Third Degree and Wise Anne, by Wise Counsellor. Cross Wise had a rough journey in the Bashford Manor at the Downs but he is a much better colt than that race would indicate. Cross Wise scored his first triumph at the Fair Grounds in February, beating fast company. Cross Wise also has finished in advance of the Lafayette Stakes victor, Continued on Page Two ! Bowled Over is regarded as one of the best juveniles to ever carry the blue and white silks of the Buhl Stable and his recent morning trials suggest that he is well placed in the Lansing. Air Arm, quick son of Ariel and Armature, by Display, won at the New Orleans Fair Grounds and also at Keeneland. The Had-dix colt ran second to Go Jeep Go at the Crescent City course and he holds a decision over Cross Wise, Black Sambo and Prissy Boy, achieved at the same track. The Noquette Purse, six furlongs for three-year-olds and upward, is one of the better attractions on the bill. Jacob Shers Frere Jacques drew the highweight of 124 pounds under the conditions of the race, while O. F. Woodwards Sir Sprite gets in the sprint with 118 pounds. Hal Price Headleys Catsmeow, Henry Forrests pair, Traveler and Cotton Joe, C. E. Buckleys Reportable, Buhl Stables Air Sailor, and Mrs. Ellsworth H. Augustus Balmoral complete the field for the secondary attraction.
