Montes Pride Earns Detroit Purse" Has Almost Length o Advantage at Wire I Kinard Colt Turns Back Lovely Nymphs Challenge; z Black Disc Is Repeater g FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 17. — Montes Pride, son of Sir Gallahad -HT. and Miss Elaine, carried the silks of the Arkansas planter, John A. Kinard, to m an impressive and game victory here today in the Great Lakes Purse, one of the better j£ offerings on a good card. Smartly handled jq by Jimmie Combest, Montes Pride as- sumed command entering the stretch and - then held on determinedly to score by a " three-quarters length margin over Mrs. Mabel C. Scholtz Lovely Nymph at the end of the six furlongs. Two lengths back, G. T. Strothers favored Tampero beat the five other three-year-old entrants for the * short end of the purse. Montes Pride shouldered 119 pounds in the Great Lakes and sped the three-quar-ters mile over the fast footing in 1:12J4. Second choice in the wagering, the Kinard gelding rewarded his supporters with odds of 19 to 10. Sky Heels, a representative of P. R. and H. L. Hinton, had the highest speed during the first half mile and led his rivals until well inside the stretch before bowing to Montes Pride. Once in the lead, the Kinard colorbearer stuck diligently to his task while under Combests hustling tactics, and withstood a fine belated challenge by Lovely Nymph, who came from last place at the final bend. Tampered reached serious contention approaching the stretch, but he was unabel to better his position during the drive and was under pressure to take third from the weary Sky Heels, spent from his early pacemaking task. Crowd of 12,000 Out With ideal weather and track conditions again prevailing for the Motor City sport, another good crowd off some 12,000 racing enthusiasts witnessed todays program. Black Disc, racing under the colors of Mrs. Moody Jolley, became the first double winner at the current meeting when she easily downed six other two-year-olds in the the five-furlong fourth race. Sent to the front by jockey Robert Lee Baird entering the stretch, Black Disc, a daughter of Fighting Fox, drew out to a two and one-half lengths verdict. David Zakoors Lusty came from well back to achieve the place award by a half length over R. M. Woods See-O-Dee. D. E. Hess Eireann, capably handled by Al Schmidl, graduated from the maiden ranks when she drove to a game victory in the mile and one-sixteenth opener. Sent to the inside of Keystone Stables Sun Umber for the stretch run, Eireann was along in the last sixteenth to beat the latter by a neck margin. Two lengths off the leaders, Gait Davis Marquist finished well enough to beat the five other starters for the short end of the purse. Eireann was the choice at 13 to 10 and she completed her task in 1:48%. The first novice race of the current Motor City season was decided today and Mrs. Lottie Wolfs Sweet Reward, ridden by Clarence Isenberg, of Gallatin, Tenn., was the winner by the three-quarters of a length. Fishman and Goldblatts Be Rose, who entered the stretch with a clear lead, was unable to withstand Sweet Rewards closing challenge but she lasted to take second honors by a nose over B. H. Wises fast finishing Federal Agent. Sweet Reward raced the six furlongs in 1:14, paid 0.80 in the straight tote pool and was good for a 3.40 pay-off in the Daily Double with Eireann. Carl Kulbeth, of Gilbert, La., was the second novice rider to earn his first victory today, successfully piloting M. H. Van Bergs Olos Star to a neck accounting in the six furlongs third. Arthur Goldblatts Potsey, who fashioned the pace for the major portion of the trip wound up second in the race, a length in advance of P. R. and H. L. Hin-tons even going Bar Grenade, third in the field -of seven starters. Olos Star stepped the three-quarters in 1:14% and returned 0.40 straight.
