Eight Sophomores in Marica Purse Thank You Sir Is Likely Favorite Engages Our Slogan, Sulie -And Midchannel in Lincoln Featured Sprint Offering WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., May 17. — Scarcity of horses fit and ready to run their best races, which caused a delay in closing entries at Churchill Downs and Detroit, struck this course today when conditions scheduled failed to attract enough thoroughbreds to fill the bill and several substitutes were fashioned before the program was released. Headlining what is at its best a mediocre offering is the Marica Purse, a seven-furlong dash for three-year-olds who have never won two races. Contesting the issue in the sprint are Mrs. Emil Denemarks Thank You Sir, E. E. Voynows Impact, Mrs. Ada L. Rices Our Slogan, Windsor Farms Midchannel, E. Scott and F. Whiteheads Elaine O., Mrs. C. A. Nicholas Prince Flor, Mrs. D. J. Meyers Star Baby and P. J. Valentis Sulie. Of these, Thank You Sir probably will attract the most attention, in spite of the fact that he has not won a race in five starts this season and captured only one as a two-year-old. What recommends him is a recent speedy trial, during which he negotiated five furlongs in :59% over this track. The gelding Went the initial half in :47 and was well within himself throughout. That was one of the best moves of the season accomplished by horses of even the best class and it is an indication that the Den-emark colorbearer has found his best stride and that he is fond of this racing strip. Cost ,600 as Yearling Thank You Sir was cut out to be a capable sort, according to veteran trainer, Bob McGarvey. The three-year-old son of Reaping Reward— Owena was obtained from the Keeneland sales in 1947 for ,600 and as a juvenile showed good speed in his early trials. However, in six starts his form left something to be desired while accounting for a single purse. He was out of the money on all other occasions. McGarvey brought him back to competition after a winter of rest during the Oak-, lawn Park meeting, where he started three times without displaying any signs of speed. He flashed some improvement later in a dash at Keeneland and his most recent effort was against a good field of allowance three-year-olds at Churchill Downs. He is to be ridden by Willie Parnell, the regular Denemark reinsman, and is co-top weight in the field with 119 pounds. Our slogan is another that brought an above-the-average price at the Keeneland sales of 1947. Mrs. Rice, well known Chicago spbrtslady, purchased the son of Heliopolis — Forestation, by Gallant Fox for 2,000 and he is another that has yet to prove his worth, although it appears that he is well placed in tomorrows feature. He has worked three-eighths of a mile in :36% as his final prep. Of those that raced during the recent Sportsmans Park meeting, Sulie appears to have the edge.
