KATHY MENDEL, always in close attendance of the leaders, forged between horses in the closing furlong and put away MLLE. ELL nearing the end. The latter made the pace by a narrow advantage on the rail, the saddle slipped at the furlong post and the rider was unable to hustle his mount thereafter and just missed. YOR OPTICIAN vied for the lead from the break and faltered nearing the end. BATTLE RAIDER had no excuse. BETSY MARIE lacked a closing rally. LOYAL WORKER dropped back suddenly after breaking fastest. IDLE MEMORY saved ground and had no mishap. MAIJO failed to respond. WHAT quit. MIGHTY QUEST broke quickest, dropped back under rating on the outside, made his bid on the outside, had to be placed in hand momentarily nearing the furlong post when bearing in, displaced the leaders and drew away under strong hand urging. OCEAN DRIVE, with the pace from the beginning, went into the lead briefly in the stretch, but was not good enough. ADMIRAL DRAKE faltered in the final furlong after setting the pace. PONTIUS PILATE, taken back for -the early stages, closed the gap quickly when called upon, lugged in badly nearing the final jump and, going by OEDIPUS, won with something left. The latter went into -the lead when WHATTA KNIGHT began to tire, held on well, but was no match for the winner. ELKRIDGE dropped back under hard restraint early, then closed with good courage. HAMPTON ROADS failed to respond. PORT RAIDER tired. PALAJA was always far back. WHATTA KNIGHT made a bad landing at the fourth jump and lost rider at the tenth obstacle. Overweight— Palaja, 3 pounds. SIGNAL was reserved until leaving the turn, went up on the extreme outside with a rush to reach command and won easily. WISTERIA established a clear lead before a quarter mile, held on willingly and outgamed INANABOUT for the place. The latter, always prominent, ran out entering the stretch. MERRY XMAS was well placed on the rail, dropped back when bearing out on the turn and made up ground on tired horses in the drive. RAMPALLION had no excuse. SAGITTARIUS displayed the most speed from the start, shook off ADMIRALS PRIDE when ready, repulsed a strong bid from. EXTINGUISHER in the stretch and won fully extended. The latter went through on the rail to threaten in the stretch but was not good enough. ROYAL GOVERNOR saved ground under rating, moved between horses in the stretch and finished determinedly. CACIQUE was not hurried early and displaced tired horses. ADMIRALS PRIDE retired after forcing the pace for a half mile. SICKLE FLIGHT raced "wide much of the journey.
