Penrod Very Successful With Calumet Cast-Off s Alerteds Trainer Also Bought September and Risk A Whirl PIMUCO, Baltimore, Md.f May 18.— Jimmy Penrod, former topnotch steeplechase rider, and currently a highly-successful conditioner of thoroughbreds, will endeavor to triumph in tomorrows 5,000 added Preakness Stakes with Hampton Stables Alerted, and thus climax a run of good fortune he has enjoyed, with acquisitions from the fabulous Calumet Farm. It was Penrod who last fall induced Frank H. Stout, Maiden, Mass., automobile dealer, and owner of the Hampton Stable, to purchase Alerted from the Wright establishment for 0,000 at private terms. This deal followed an earlier transaction in which Penrod acquired September and Risk A Whirl from the Calumet menage for the account of W. J. Lenihan, paying but 0,000 for the two of them. Alerteds development under Penrod is now clearly written into the record books, reaching its peak here earlier in the week when the Bull Lea — Hastily Yours colt turned in a smashing victory over Brook-mfeade Stables Bold in the Preakness Prep by running a mile and a sixteenth in 1:43%. Penrod, a 42-year-old "veteran," is naturally enthusiastic about his colt, and admits that he has an excellent chance in the "big one." According to Jimmy, "not only did Alerted beat Bold, but he beat him at his own game, speed and more speed." "We should go even better when some one has the assignment of taking the early lick from Bold," avers Penrod, "for Alerted would prefer to come from off a sizzling pace, rather than run with it." As Penrod puts it, "My home is where the stable is, but the family is currently housed in Miami, where the two children — a 14-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl — are completing their school terms." The irony of the situation is that Calumet Farm, which has won four recent renewals of the Preakness, is without a starter in this years Triple Crown event.
