North Carolina Gains Game Derby Trial Stakes Triumph LINGFIELD PARK, Surrey, Eng., May 18 Reuters .—North Carolina, bay son of Kingsway and Kittyhawk, "who is owned by Mrs. John F. Bryce, forced himself into Epsom Derby prominence by making practically all of the running to win the Derby Trial Stakes over 12 furlongs here today. Starting at 10 to 1, North Carolina was taken to the front by Charlie Elliott soon after the first furlong had been run and held the lead under great gameness to withstand challenges of Stokes and his stablemate, the 2 to 1 favorite, William S. Woodwards Turco. The victors winning margin was a length and one-half and the judges, after consulting a photo, placed Stokes second by a head in front of Turco. - After the race, trainer Boyd-Rockforjfc said, "Both North Carolina and Turco will take their chances at Epsom. I thought North Carolina stayed on really well, but I dont yet know who will ride him in the Derby."
