— « Diamond Jubilee Preakness Expected to Gross 10,070 Winning Owner Will Receiyet 3,935 If Original Nominee Or 0,820 If Supplemental By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 18.— The monetary value of the Preakness Stakes, which declined from a 00,000 high to 0,000 last year, has reached a happy medium this season and will carry a 5,000 association endowment for tomorrows seventy-fifth, or diamond jubilee running. Should the eight-horse field named overnight remain intact for the post parade at approximately 5:15 p. m., the gross value of this "Triple Crown" event will be 10,-070, with the winning owner to receive, 3,935 if his colt was among the original nominees, or 0,820 should Alerted, Repetoire or Timely Reward be the winner. These three colts were supplemental nominations at a cost of ,250. Not only will the winning owner be liberally rewarded for the confidence he shows in his charge, but the owners of the second, third and fourth horses will share in the purse distribution. Second money is worth 5,000, third is worth ,500, and the owner of the fourth horse takes down ,750. Cost of Starting Of the 10,070 gross purse, horsemen paid in a total of 5,070 through nomination and subsequent eligibility and. starting fees. It cost a turf patron either 85 or ,000 to have his colors carried in the Preakness, depending upon how early he recognized his colts stakes potentialities; Unlike the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness closed as early as September 15, 1949, with 332 thoroughbreds having been made eligible through the initial payment of 0. Then on August 15, 1950, 151 hopefuls remained eligible when their respective owners paid 5. January 15, 1951 was the next payment date, with 64 remaining eligible at a cost of 00. The only other important date leading up to the actual running of the event was April 16, 1951, which was the final date for supplemental nominations.
