MURPHY WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, HI., May 18. — Racing secretary Larry Bogen-chutz - is reminding horsemen that the r- , i .... deadline deadline for for nominat- deadline deadline for for nominat- nominating for the Peabody Memorial Handicap is midnight Saturday. It is highly probable that those who control* the activities of Ruhe, Royal Mustang and a few other sturdy three-year-olds have known that for some time and if other owners and trainers have a mental lapse lapse it it is is probably probably just just lapse lapse it it is is probably probably just just as well, as they have saved 25, which constitutes entrance and starting fees of each horse. Ask the man on the next stool and he will tell you that either Ruhe or Royal Mustang or possibly Fanfare, who will check in Sunday, will win the 5,000 gallop. Names of the others have been lost in the dust thrown up by that trio in the Kentucky Derby. Tomorrows Crete Handicap, first of the Chicago stakes, promises to be a battle royal, while the Joliet Stakes, sandwiched between the Crete and the Peabody on the Lincoln Fields agenda, may also be worth remembering. . .The Joliet was the first stake ever staged by the Lincoln Fields management. It was run on the opening day of 1926 and was won by No Regrets . .And do you know who was the riding star of that afternoon of long ago? It was none other than 43-year-old Willie Garner, who rode two winners that day. Willie is still going strong at Washington Park. Forty-year-old John Matson, who hit the comeback trail in riding Vanslam to victory Thursday, formerly rode under the name of John Mattioli. He returns to the saddle after a brief spell at training.. Jockey Willie Carstens, his right ankle in a cast, departed for his home in Davenport, Iowa, where he will rest up before leaving for Fairmount Park . . . Jockey Melvin Duhon, who was also injured at Sportsmans Park, expects to resume riding the latter part of the Lincoln Fields meeting. . Owner Helen S. Roman Bath in the Crete Handicap, Oil Capitol in the Metropolitan at Belmont and Inseparable in the Churchill Downs stellar piece. Ken Church will be here to ride Roman Bath and Robert Baird will go to Kentucky to steer Inseparable. Trotsek, who has about 50 horses in his care, was here Thursday morning, then left for New York. Think youre in bad luck? Give a look. A high executive at Sportsmans Park drew Count Turf in a 00 pool on the Kentucky Derby and sold his share for two bucks.. . One of the press-box telegraphers carried of his wifes money to the track to bet on her selection. He forgot! The horse won and paid 2.20 . .Grandstand customer placed a new 0 hat on his seat to reserve same while he made a wager. Got shut out on the winner and came back to find a 200-pound matron sitting on his Continued on Page Forty-Eight f LINCOLN FIELDS Z NOTEBOOK Continued from Page Three ~ headpiece. When he remonstrated, the lady landed a right on his jaw, following which the man was ejected for causing a disturbance But, on the other hand. A friend writes of a Denver newsman who won 00 in a Derby-eye galloping-domino game, and liking Phil D., the Rocky Mountain favorite, he put the boodle on that animals nose. Phil D. was beaten, but was coupled in the field with Count Turf. Our hero carried over ,000 back to Colorado. A new set of silks will be seen on Chicago tracks this summer when the Rebel Stable sends horses postward. The outfit is owned by Mrs. William G ruber, whose husband conducts the Meal-A-Minute restaurants in New Orleans. The stable is made up mostly of two-year-olds and they are trained by Tom "Peaches" Fleming. . . Ex-jockey Tommy Root has his own personal development, Circus Clown, the six-year-old, in training here. The gelding, who has been in Roots charge for over four years, has won over 5,000 this season ... Owners and trainers racing in this area have been requested not to use old and faded silks. The suggestion comes from Stuy-vesant Peabody, Jr., chairman of the Illinois Racing Board, who likes everything . spic and span; The hedges bordering the turf course at Washington Park have been trimmed down considerably in order to enable the patrons to obtain a better view of the] horses on the backstretch and around the far turn. . .Little Egypt, a recent starter, is the first horse ever bred or raced by D. Elmo Jordan, secretary-treasurer of the Illinois Breeders Association. . .Understand an individual in this area is passing himself off as jockey N. L. PJerson and seeking wagers. The real Pierson is believed to be in California. . .Chicagoans are interested in horses. Recently, 100 saddle horses were sold at auction at Libertyville, 111., for a total of 00,000. On this, the first Saturday of the meeting, the crowd should be out in force.
