White Sox Trim Yanks, 7-4 On Grand Slam by Stewart NEW YORK, N. Y., May 18 UP. — Eddie Stewart, who used to be a Yankee himself, Humiliated his old teammates today when he blasted a grand slam home run in the eighth inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 7 to. 4 victory and hand New York its first defeat at home this season. The Yankees, who had won ten straight games at home, also had knocked out 15 consecutive starting pitchers until lefty Billy Pierce went the distance against them today and racked up his fourth victory. The Sox had come from behind in a tight duel by getting two runs in the seventh to tie the score at 3-all. Those runs were negotiated on a pair of singles by Nelson Fox and Phil Masi, an error by Gil McDougald at third base, a walk to Pierce and a long fly by Chico Carrasquel. Fox previously had accounted for the first Chicago run with a homer in the eighth, Orestes Minoso singled and Eddie Robinson was awarded first base when catcher Yogi Berra tipped his bat for an error. Zeke Zarilla beat out a sacrifice for a hit to load the bases and Stewart, in the game only because Jim Busby had suffered an injured thumb earlier, unloaded them with his clout. The Yankees made two runs in the first inning oh Mickey Mantles triple, a single by McDougald, a walk to Berra and Hank Bauers single. They got their third run in the sixth when Joe DiMaggio was hit by a pitch, Berra doubled, and Jerry Coleman hit a scoring fly. After the grand slammer by Stewart, Berra singled in the Yankee eighth and .came on around on a hit by Coleman and pinchhitter Billy Martins fly.
