Boulmetis Hoping Luck Will Hold Out Given Mount on Alerted in Prep When Assigned Rider Didnt Put in Appearance PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 18. — Sammy Boulmetis, 24-year-old Baltimore booter, who will ride Hampton Stables Alerted in tomorrows diamond jubilee running of the 5,000 Preakness, has spent the past several days wondering just how far his good fortune can carry him, and hoping that it will be at least a mile and three-sixteenths farther. • The Greek jockey lucked into his mount on Alerted in last Mondays Preakness Prep, being given the assignment because Hedley Woodhouse failed to put in an appearance from New York after having been retained by Frank Stout, the Maiden, Mass., automobile dealer who _ owns the Hampton Stable. Plaudits have been heaped on Boulmetis for the excellent judgment he displayed in the Prep, and the loudest voices were those of Stout and trainer Jimmy Penrod. The latter avers that Boulmetis couldnt have ridden a better race if he had been following a map. Carries Out Instructions Carrying out Penrods instruction to a "T," Boulmetis made several early moves to Bold in that test, none of which was sustained. He then eased back with Alerted, re-engaged his rival from the outside and drove to victory. The triumph, plus the excellent manner in which it was accomplished, assured Boulmetis of the Preakness mount astride the Bull Lea — Hastily Yours colt. Boulmetis was born and raised in this city and attefided Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. He soon found his way to the race tracks and was first employed by trainer Fred Hannon. He started his saddle career about three years ago and enjoyed marked success atop the thoroughbreds conditioned by E. W. King, for whom he still does considerable riding. King sold Boulmetis contract to the Glen Riddle Farm, with whom the jockey was affiliated until the recent death of Samuel D. Riddle. Boulmetis has since been riding free lance, and doing quite well, thank you. His saddle engagements are made by Freddie "Schnozzle" Krieger, who had a turn at amateur fighting and race riding during his younger days, but who seems much better placed as a jockeys agentl
