Red Sox Edge Indians, 2-1 On Pinch Hit by Stephens BOSTON, Mass., May 18 UP.— Pinchhitter Vern Stephens, kept out of the lineup with a pulled thigh muscle, belted a two-run single in the eighth inning today to give the Bbston Red Sox a 2-1 victory/ over the Cleveland Indians and take undis-J puted possession of "fifth place in the Amer-1 ican League. Credited with the victory was slendeij Maurice McDermott who had opened ttvJ inning with his second single of the afterj noon and was making his first start on thfk mound since April 28. , The wild, 22-year-old southpaw, per mitted the Indians six hits while strikin out eight and issuing five passes.
