Prize Ring Favored for William Penn Rusty, Metal Mike Among Eight Foes Gustave Rings Speedy Colt Comes to Garden State With Four Scores to His Credit By WILLIAM PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May lS.-r-Gustave Rings Prize Ring, top-weighted with 119 pounds, heads a field of nine juvenile colts and geldings who will compete here tomorrow in the tenth running of the 5,000 added William Penn Stakes. The flashy gray son of Mahmoud and Good Defense finished second to Primate in the Youthful Stakes at Jamaica, and previously placed third in the Hialeah Park Juvenile Stakes. He is the only nominee to the five-furlong dash who. has shown merit in stakes competition, and he looms a heavy choice. An attractive program has been arranged around the William Penn, although racing secretary M. C. "Ty" Shea encountered considerable difficulty in acquiring suitable performers and the entries were released very late. The coughing epidemic, formerly not considered serious at this track, was intensified wfth last evenings abrupt change in weather conditions, with the unexpected cold spell adding a great number of horses to the ailing list. Bred by John D. Hertz Although the majority of the contestants in the William Penn have yet to prove themselves s high-class racers, secretary Shea was fortunate in obtaining a field of well-bred youngsters. Their respective weights were decided under allowance conditions and are as follows: C. E. Buckleys Red Romeo, F. Eugene Dixon, Jr.s, Metal Mike, Cedar Farms Rusty, R. E. Cudahays A-Pacopep and Mrs. C. A. Copes Sir Sidney, 117 pounds each; W. H. Canes Nate Herzfeld, P. Groos Knights Reward, and H. W. Finchers War Atom, each to carry 110 pounds. Prize Ring was bred by John D. Hertz and purchased by Ring at the Keeneland sales for 3,000. He has already repaid that sum with a "couples of nickels" surplus, by virtue of his two stakes efforts and four victories. In seven starts, beginning with a second on January 18 at Hialeah, Prize Ring has never finished worse than third and he appears a standout to add another bracket to his collection tomorrow. Continued on Page Forty-Nine Prize Ring Accorded Edge For William Penn Stakes Continued from Page Five He has plenty of speed and stamina and, when defeated, they have been forced to come after him. Jockey C. Enrico is scheduled to come down from New York to handle the assignment. Cedar Farms Rusty, a gelded son of Warlock and Tawny, was veryi impressive winning a maiden race here on opening day. He has been training steadily with the William Penn as his objective. Sir Sidney is a lightly-regarded entrant, but he did display vast improvement to win his last race and could develop an outside threat. C. E. Buckleys Red Romeo has been training well, but this son of Amphitheatre has not been out since Gulfstream Metal Mike, shipped in from New York, has shown little in his two races, but he is" highly regarded by his cormections.Knights Reward and A-Pacopep, who narrowly defeated the former in an engagement here, are also both fancied by their trainers and will receive considerable backing. Nate Herzfeld has not shown by his races that he is ready to meet this kind, while War Atom displayed nothingr of note in his two starts.
