SWEENEY GRANT Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, HI., May 25. — Sixteen of the more formidable juvenile colts and geldings in the Midwest were named to contest the 0,000 Joliet Stakes, first added money event of the Chicago season. Should all entered start, the five-furlong fixture will gross 2,7775, with ,150 to the winner. In addition to the nominal attraction, racing secretary Lawrence C. Bogenschutz had carded eight other interesting races. The Steger Handicap over the mile and one-sixteenth turf course, and the Mighty Story Purse, at six furlongs, should adequately serve as supporting tests to the two-year-old fixture. The Joliet field shapes up very much as anticipated with the Chicago sportswoman, Mrs. Emil Denemark, holding a powerful hand in her entry of Red Curtice and Robert. Three other couplings comprise the group. They include the Red Top Farm duo of Red Charger and Brown Pirate; Louis J. Hollenbach, Sr.s, Nanchang and Amafox, and Fancy Dandy, owned- by Smith and Koontz, and Yaleman, the property of I. W. Huggett. The latter pair will be saddled by Dan Howell. Remaining entrants include Reverie Knoll Farms Smoke Screen, E. P. Rodriguez Eds Pride, Howard A. Jones Hoopla, Lucas B. Combs Sunlo, Mrs. Ethel Galliger Bandys Errards Guide, Harold G. Captured Bashford Manor Red Curtice, winner of the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs previous to his arrival here, and his undefeated stablemate, Robert, probably will rule the post time favorites for the twenty-fourth running of the Joliet. Augmenting Red Curtices score in the Bashford Manor is his success in one division of the Thoroughbred Club Dinner Purse. Red Curtice was purchased for 3,500 at the yearling sales last summer. Robert, gelded son of Whirlaway and Tacky Sue, was knocked down to Mrs. Denemark at the vendues for 2,100 and confirmed her. confidence -by racing to an impressive victory in his first and only start. Robert will be benefitted by his No. 1 post position, whereas Red Curtice will be started from the extreme outside. Errards Guide won three of four starts. He gained considerable prestige -during his Continued on Page Thirty-Seven Joliet Stakes Attracts Sixteen Fast Juveniles Red Curtice, Robert, Oh Lej and Errards Guide Vie at Washington Continued from Page One Louisville campaign and most likely will prove troublesome. Oh Leo won five in a row including the Duncan F. Kenner Stakes at the Fair Grounds before finishing fourth in a division of the Lafayette at Keeneland. Happy Go Lucky bested a talented group of youngsters the opening day of this meeting and earned the chance to test his speed in the Joliet. Red Charger finished second to the Bockman racer in that particular dash. Brown Pirate has been working well for this engagement and must merit consideration. The homebred Sunlo finished fifth in his lone start, but improvement can be expected. Hoopla has tasted actual competition on two occasions. Both times he was unplaced. *■ Smoke Screen annexed runner-up honors to Red Curtice in the Bashford Manor. The Reverie Knoll racer is regarded a precocious youngster and may be the dark horse of the field. Nanchang, winner of his third start, has partly compensated his owner for the ,500 invested in him. Ama-fox, ,500 yearling, finished second to Robert during the Downs meeting. Two members of the Steger field have won at the current session. They include Mrs. Denemarks Provocative, who will answer the bugle under a 116-pound impost, and Mrs. A. M. Creechs Kosadus, who has been assigned 112 pounds. Rounding out the group are John Marschs top-weighted Whirling Dough, 117; John Wolfs Lucky Codine, 114; Mrs. Hattie Toff els Owens Cuts, 112; Mrs. C. C. Normans Autan, 110, and Mrs* Mabel McCabes Mr. Fox, 106. The Mighty Story Purse, for four-year-olds and upward, attracted a good field headed by the Hasty House Farms entry of Wine List and Seaward. Slated to match strides against the pair are Ray Wilkinsons Fleet Factor, E. C. Roths Enforcer, Mrs. H. Toffels Ballydam, Valley View Farms Sabaean, W. J. Waldens Circus Clown, and Bernice Irvings Diamond Lane. This six-furlong sprint will mark the second start of the year for Seaward. The Hasty House gelding and his stablemate, Inseparable, were among the best handicap performers of last season. Seaward won four stakes, and in his only start of 1951, ,he finished- sixth to Black George in a sprint event at- Churchill Downs.
