Y., May 25. — C. V. Whitneys Jazz Baby who making her first start since last November, scored an upset in the featured Level Best Purse at Belmont Park today, reaching the end of the mile a length and a half before Apheim Stables Early Heath. William Ewings Dark Favorite was almost a length farther back and a little more than a length before Mrs. Ada L. Rices Danada Gift, the favorite. Hedley Woodhouse, who had been in a riding slump, completed a double on Jazz Baby, haviner won the second race on Rub-Adub-Dub. The daughter of Mahmoud — Dipsy Doodle, by Equipoise, paid 4.30 and was teletimed in 1:37%. ValaHium, winner of the co-featured Boojiana Purse, is also out of an Equipoise mare. A crowd of 19,504 turned out to view the moderate program in much pleasant weather than that of recent days. Sentember was first out of the gate in the Level Best, but was quickly passed by Dark Favorite, Jazz Baby and Early Heath, while Danada Gift was back in sixth place at the end of a quarter mile, followed by Lotus Blossom and Miss Degree. Dark Favorite and Jazz Baby raced head and head around the turns, while Early Heath was close at hand on the outside. At the same time, Danada Gift began to move un along the rail .and came into the stretch in fourth place. September dropped back after three furlongs. Gradually Draws Away Curving for home, Jazz Baby saved ground along the rail and gradually inched away under a strong hand ride through the final furlonjr. Dark Favorite held on fairly well, while Danada Gift was able to gain only slightly once straightened away in the home lane. Lotus Blossom closed some ground in the stretch and was only a nose of fthe board in fifth place. Harry LaMontagnes Valadium indicated that she may be a stout candidate in the classic Coaching Club American Oaks when she won her first start of the season after being all but left at the post. The daughter of Lovely Night— Vanda, by Equipoise, closed like a whirlwind through .the stretch to score by more than a length over Edwin Holtons Hay Mon, who led C. Isidor Bie-bers .pacemaking My Bebby by another length and a half. Fourth money went to Apheim Stables Rampallion, who forced the pace to the stretch, then finished three lengths behind My Bebby. Eddie Arcaro rode Valadium, who won her iast two races in 1950 and was only once unplaced in nine starts. The handsome chestnut filly paid and stepped the six furlongs in 1:11%, but was literally flying the last part of the dash. Holders of the winning Daily Double combination were rewarded with a liberal 2.30 after Salvator Giglios Drakensberg and Cain Hoy Stables Rub-Adub-Dub had won the first two races. Con Errico hustled Drakensberg to the end of the opening seven furlongs a neck before Oscar Ciresa, Jr.s Landlord, who has now finished second in his last four starts. Emil Arnolds Leadership, rated off the pace for the first time in at least two years, finished strongly to be third, a length and a half farther back. Drakensberg paid 0.20 straight. Rub-Adub-Dub raced with J. J. Colan-dos Trompeta for a half mile of the four and half furlongs of the second race on thes traight course, then drew away under Hedley Woodhouses whip to score by two lengths. Mrs. Frances Gardiners Carys Hope, led Ethel D. Jacobs Hadassah by a half-length. The winner paid .90 straight and was timed in :52%.
