Kings Plate at Woodbine Has Twenty-Two Entrants Britannia May Be Tepid Choice Over Libertine and Scapa Blow By JACK AYRES Staff Correspondent WOODBINE PARK, Toronto,. Ont., May 25. — The Kings Plate, the Dominions most coveted turf prize and the oldest fixture continuously run on this continent, will have its ninety-second running tomorrow at Woodbine Park, palatial home of the Ontario Jockey Club. * Of the 86 Canadian-foaled three-year-olds originally nominated for the 5,000 added tradition-steeped event, which is contested over the mile and a furlong route, no fewer than 22 have been named overnight for tomorrows renewal, making the field the bulkiest since the once all-powerful Seagram Stables King OConnor turned turned back 21 rivals in 1933. Should all 22 face starter Douglas Haig, the race will gross a record of 1,500 in addition to the 50 Guineas, the gift of His Majesty King George VI. Presentation of the plate will be made by His Excellency Field Marshal, the Right Honorable, the Viscount Alexander of Tunis, K. G., Governor-General of Canada, who, along with Lady Alexander, will arrive in state at the historic East-end course after the running of the first race. Although rated a fairly wide-open contest, four horses are expected to receive the bulk of public support. The favored ones are E. P. Taylors Britannia, Medway Stables Libertine, J. E. Holbecks Mount Branca, and Western Canadas hope, the Whit-tier Park Stock Farads Scapa Blow. By reason of her sparkling record as a juvenile, when she won four of her seven starts, which included an easy and front-running victory in the Woodbine Coronation Stakes and her Plate Trial score of last Saturday, Britannia, a daughter of Bunty Lawless and Iribelle, will most likely rule a terpid choice despite the cold fact that only two of her sex have captured Plate honors in the past 16 years. They were Sally Fuller in 1935 and Paolita in 1943.
