J. MURPHY Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 331., June 5.— Hosea Lee Richardson, a little colored apprentice from Columbia, S. C, won the first race of his career when he ably steered W. J. Waldens Circus Clown to victory in the High Cloud Purse, feature race at this track today. Appearing under silks for the second time in his life, young Richardson, who celebrated his 16th birthday, May 20, performed like a veteran, and handriding his mount near the end -when it seemed as if me would be beaten, landed i the gelding home a head in advance of the I f avored.Prpvocative, With Mr. Fox finishing third. Much of Richardsons successful debut in turf ranks must be given Tommy Root, trainer of Circus Clown, who had spent several years developing the lad. Root is confident the boy will become one of the most popular riders on the Chicago circuit this summer. Takes Mount to Front Quickly Richardson demonstrated his ability in a number of different ways during the running of the seven-furlong affair. He had Circus Clown off in the first flight and quickly hustled him to the front. Going down the backstretch Circus Clown opened up an advantage of over two lengths, and coming to the stretch bend Richardson struck him with the whip to keep him going. The boy held his mount to the rail j entering the stretch, and when a threat! from Mr. Fox loomed, he used his whip at the opportune moment. With Mr. Fox and Provocative both racing strongly after passing the sixteenth pole, it seemed as if Hosea might have to await until another day for success, but just when his supporters had about given up the lad went to hand riding once more and that did the trick. Circus Clown again caught his rivals and was drawing out slightly at the end. Richardson, a poker-faced youngster who is nicknamed "Shortnin Bread," did not seem at all excited as he returned to the Continued on Pagz Thirty-Four Circus Clown Ekes Out Head Score at Homewood Gives Apprentice Richardson His First Visit to Charmed Circle Continued from Page One weighing out station. While trainer Root was beaming and backslapping the little colored fellow took it all in stride. Richardson is the first jockey of his race to appear on Chicago tracks for about eight years. He will probably obtain his share of mounts in the future. A crowd of 7,847 withnessed the running of todays bill. The gathering was considerably smaller than that of Monday, although climatic conditions were much more pleasant. Princess Lygia, a first-time starter from the stable of Mrs. Harry Trotsek, came through with a smashing victory in the Mata Hari Purse for maiden two-year-old fillies, when she won by eight lengths. A field of 12, including a number of nominees for Saturdays Miss America Stakes, were engaged in the contest, but the daughter of. Roman ran away from them to cover the five furlongs in :58%. She was ridden by Ken Church and er impressive performance may make her one of the choices in Saturdays stellar attraction. Hadraini. the favorite, broke on top but was unable to hold her advantage and finished fourth. Delta Eagle, winner of a couple of races at Gulfstream Parkk and who had made two futile tries at this meeting, came through over a fair band of sprinters in the fifth when hft sped six furlongs in 1:10%. Rodrigo was the favorite here, with Hypo-style a strong second choice, but both were unplaced. Hypostyle, supposedly the best sprinter among the Ulinois-breds, showed an especially poor effort. He changed hands via the claiming route after the race, in which Connies Boy was second and Saint Nicholas, third. Favorites accounted for three of the first four races on the program when Eye Catcher connected in the first; Eternal Flirt in the second, and Peter Vinegar in the fourth. Both Eye Catcher, with Adams up, and Eternal Flirt, with Bailey aboard, led all the way to form a Daily Double combination that paid 4.40. For Peter Vinegar it was his seventh start and first victory. Jockey Doug Dodson brought the half-brother of Volcanic from behind to snatch success in a drive over Twin Bull. Eye Catcher was claimed out of his race by A. N. Winnick.
