EVANS — General manager of the Breeders Sales Company, reported a total of 103 breeders will be represented at the four-day Keeneland yearling sales opening on July 30. % Total of 1 03 Breeders From Seven States To Offer Stock at Keeneland s Vendues To Sell 413 Yearlings From i Original List of 764 Head; 240 Colts Will Go on Block By HUGH J. McGUIRE Staff Correspondent LEXINGTON, Ky., June 5.— A total of 103 breeders from Kentucky, Ohio, Ten-nessee Maryland, Florida, Virginia and Illinois are represented by 413 selected yearlings in the final compilation for the catalogue of the 1951 Keeneland Summer Sale. William S. Evans, general manager of the cooperative Breeders Sales Company, and his staff, selected this number through study of pedigrees and conformation from an original entry list that totaled 764 youngsters. As a result of this careful screening of the entrants, just a few more than 100 of them will be offered on each of. the four sales days, July 30, 31 and August 1 and 2. The demand for colts usually exceeds that for fillies and Evans has worked out a nice balance to include 240 of the former against 173 fillies. The larger consignments again will be m utilized on each of the four sales days to give an over-all symmetry to the vendues. On the first day, Leslie Combs n. will offer 19 and the Wood vale Farm of Royce G. Martin, 21 head. The second day will find Claiborne Farms 19 colts, and nine colts and five fillies from the Stoner Greek Farm of Mrs. John D. Hertz, numerically topping the offerings. On the third afternoon the Mereworth Farm of Walter J. Salmon will send 43 youngsters through the .ring, the largest individual consignment of the sale. This lot will be supported by a dozen consigned by the Hurstland Farm of Charles Nuckols and Sons and 11 from the Hermitage Farm of Warner L. Jones, Jr. On the final day, the Coldstream Stud of E. E. Dale Shaffer will submit the second largest consignment of the vendues with 37 youngsters. This group will have stout support from the dozen from Thomas Piatts Brookdale Farm and nine each from Douglas M. Davis, Jr.s, High Hope Farm and Col. Phil T. Chinns Old Hickory Farm. While these 11 consignors represent half of the total number of entrants in the sales, it is felt in many quarters that the real strength in the complete sales picture is that the consignors of smaller lots must also meet the stringent requirements needed to get listings. The five youngsters from the Forest Retreat Farm of Dr. Eslie Asbury are the result of most discriminating matings. Ira Drymons consignment of three colts and two fillies have attracted considerable favorable comment. The four fillies in Grant Dorlands group offer excellent racing and breeding material. His colt is by Reaping Reward. Charles A. Asbury and his son, Thomas, offer two handsome colts by Brookfield and one by Polynesian. There are two very interesting youngsters in groups offered by the Keeneland Stud of Keene Gurnee and Dr. Charles W. Hagyard. The former has listed a brown colt by Side Boy — Contrary Mary. This colt is a full brother to Pur Sang, winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes and — — the Peabody Memorial. Dr. Hagyards bay colt is by Free For All — Roused, and is a full brother to the Santa Anita Derby winner, Roughn Tumble. Other top offerings in the smaller, groups are those of T. Owen Campbell, Charlton Clay, Jack Denis, Dun-treath Farm, George Hume, A. B Karsner, Horatio Mason, J. C Metz, Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Nelson, Harrie B. Scott and Son, Shawnee Farm, Allen T.-Simmons, Ed. K. Thomas, Strodes Creek Farm, Walnut Spring Farm, Howard Wells and Miss Mildred Woolwine. Last year 382 yearlings were sold in the Summer Sale for *294,000, for an average of ,009. In past years, 31 yearlings sold at the Summer Sale, subsequently won in excess of 00,000 each. Among these top handicap stars are the Kentucky Derby winners, Jet Pilot and Hoop Jr. Also in the group are Ace Admiral, Cosmic Bomb, With Pleasure, Be Fleet, Sunglow, Oil Capitol, Bolero, Prevaricator, Star Pilot, Royal Blood and Beaugay. |
