SWEENEY GRANT Staff Correspondent HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 14.— Mrs. John L. Oglesby s Hedgewood, the 7 to 10 favorite here today, encountered but a minimum of difficulty in registering his first success of the year in the Knight Commander Purse. The strapping six-year-old son of Reaping Reward and Fake was slow to gain his best stride, but gradually inched closer to his field during the late portion of the mile and one-sixteenth essay, and when shaken slightly by jockey John Adams at the head of the lane, quickly took command and held sway thereafter to defeat William S. Clines Dad by two lengths. Hedgewood was the. handiest of winners, and his advantage undoubtedly would have been increased had he been placed to a drive or to a mild pressure. Dad, in turn, held a two-length margin over Bernard W. Landys Best Doings as the distance was traversed in" a sparkling 1:46%. Best Doings Weakens Adams and Hedgewood were content to remain in fifth position during the early running as Best Doings and Dad waged a heatedly contested battle for initial honors. Best Doings was the more adept sprinter of the two for the first six panels, but began to weaken thereafter. During the run down the backstretch Hedgewood, along the rail, gradually began to wear down the top ones, but it was not until the leaders curved into the home lane did the Oglesby gelding enter a contending position. Tiring as a result of his early efforts, Best Doings drifted out at the head of the lane, taking. Dad with him, at which time Adams took advantage of the situation and sent the oncoming victor to the front. Once in command Adams merely hand rode his mount as Dad tried gamely, but in vain to close the gap. The latter may have been closer had it not been for the mishap on the turn, but it was the opinion of the majority that the favorite was much the best even though he did receive more than ample racing room throughout. A surprisingly large crowd of 13,181 braved inclement weather to witness the afternoon of sport. A light but cold rain prevailed during the first two races, the precipitation became heavier as the program progressed and gave indication that Continued on Page Five Hedgewood Captures Knight Commander Purse Snugged HomeTwo Lengths Before Dad as 13,181 See Lincoln Event Continued from Page One the strip would be changed from fast to either "good" or "slow" later in the day. Tartar H., seven-year-old son of Ptolemy and Angela Marie, carried the red and green colors of owner Tracy Bougon to a convincing victory in the third. Under the feathery burden of 106 pounds, with Jimmy Breckons in the saddle, the winner sprinted, into command after four furlongs of the mile and a sixteenth affair and steadily drew clear to reach the wire three lengths before Dominion, it was some 12 lengths farther back to Black Yankee. y The winner rewarded his backers with a .40 mutuel. , R. A. Connells Ripton, with jockey Tony Skoronski in the saddle, won the opener. The Mikel Farms Joggins closed with good energy to be second, two lengths in the ; wake of the leader and one and one-quarter lengths before J. C. Harrisons fast-closing Little Jeff. Blue Agent, from the J. W. Snider unit,-was fully extended while accounting for the second dash. John Hejnas Criss Cross was his closest rival as William Hal Bish-opNs highly regarded Bill Twig finished third. Blue Agent rounded a Daily Double with Ripton valued at 4.20.
