i : ■ Maglie Gains Sixth Victory of Season Giant Pitcher Is Accused Of Throwing Spitter in 8 to 3 Triumph Oyer Reds By MILTON RICHMAN United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, N. Y., May 14.— Sal Maglie, hounded and harrassed almost every inning by Cincinnati manager Luke Sewells accusations that he was throwing a "spitter," successfully kept both the Reds and his temper under control today while pitching the New York Giants to an 8-3 victory. In recording his sixth successive triumph without a defeat, Maglies patience was worn thin by Sewells continuous demands that plate umpire Augie Donatelli examine the ball. After obeying Sewells request for the eighth time, Maglie angrily threw the ball over Donatellis head in the third. Giant manager Leo Durocher came running out of the dugout to calm sizzling Sal and advise him to disregard Sewell. The entire Cincinnati bench was irksome from the first inning on, when, after his high, fly grazed the short right field fence for a cheap double, Bobby Thomson was ruled safe on a disputed steal of home. Successive Home Runs Cincinnati starter ,Ken Raffensberger, still kicking disgustedly at the mound in protest of the decision on Thomson, walked Alvin Dark to oppen the second and then yielded successive home runs to army-bound Willie Mays and Wes Westrum. Between Sewells complaints and a temporary lack of control, Maglie floundered temporarily in the third and was nicked for a run on Joe Rossis triple to deep left, two walks and Grady Hattons fly ball. Roy McMillans second homer of the season reduced the score to 4-2 in the fifth, but the Giants combed fork-ball pitcher Frank Hiller for a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame on singles by Whitey Lockman, Bob Elliott and Don Mueller, plus Darks infield out. Darks first error of the season on pinch-hitter Bob Borkowskis grounder, followed by Hattons single and Bobby Adams long fly gave the Reds their last run in the seventh, while the Giants merely added to the final score when Thomson singled home two more runs in the eighth. Almost until the final pitch, Sewell irritated Maglie and the throng of 6,366 with his repeated demands that Donatelli be shown the ball.
