Meyer, Phillies Defeat Cubs, 9 to 2 Collect Eleven Hits Off Three Hurlers Hamner, Jones Lead Attack For Winners; Sauer Averts Whitewash With Home Run By RUSS GREEN United Press Sports Writer PHILADELPHIA, Pa., May 14.— Righthander Russ Meyer, a hard-luck pitcher for the Phillies, won his first game of the season after four defeats today when he •trounced the Cubs, 9-2, in a free-hitting game before 3,212 at Shibe Park. The big righthander previously plagued by every misfortune from home run balls to games lost by errors, gave up 11 hits, but had little difficulty winning after the Phillies built up a big lead in the early innings. Meyer, who fanned five, missed a shutout when Hank Sauer pounded his seventh home run of the season high into the left field stands in the sixth inning with Eddie Miksis on base for Sauers 28th and 29th runs batted in this season. The Phillies, taking their second straight from the Cubs and a sweep of the two-game series, clipped three pitchers for 11 hits, including Granny Hamners second homer in two days and Willie Jones fifth homer of the season. Hamner, Jones Lead Phillies Attack Willie Ramsdell, fourth Chicago pitcher, was the only one to escape undamaged. Hamner, with a triple and single in addition to his homer, and Jones with four runs batted in, back-boned the Phillies attack. The Phillies wasted little time chasing starter Bob Kelly when Jones singled home two runs in the first. Three more came in the second on a single by Jack Mayo, a walk to Eddie Waitkus, a safe bunt by Richie Ashburn and a single by Hamner Which ended Kellys stay on the mound. Ashburn counted the third run of the inning when Burgess flied to center. Turk Lown, third Cub pitcher, was hit for triples by Hamner and Ennis and Jones two-run homer in the seventh before Ramsdell came in to finish the game.
