►— : 1 — Torch of Iran Out for Repeat Victory in Paul Bunyan Purse French-Bred Was Impressive Jn Last Outing; Faces Six In Lincoln Six-Furlong Test HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 14.— The Emerald Isle Hotel Stables Torch of Iran, French-bred son of Tehran and Fiery Cross, who defeated the better handicap performers at Sportsmans Park, will be accorded the opportunity tomorrow of extending his victory streak, in the featured Paul Bunyan Purse. The five-year-old gray gelding takes up 115 pounds, including the usual allowance for apprentice Ronnie Baldwin. Torch of Irans success in the recent Spring Handicap at the neighboring course was impressive to say the least, and the manner iffwhich he beat his rivals in that essay would, seem to suggest that he will prove difficult to down in future future engagements? Slated to contest the French-bred in the six furlongs of the Paul Bunyan are Felix Randos Starecase, Mr. and Mrs. Ghent B. Holmans Mais Boy, Ralph Chudejs Hard Toab, Clifford Mooers Quihi, Walter Burkes Deal Me In, and Marion H. Van-Bergs Countess In. Torch of Iran listed among his victims in the Spring Handicap Starecase and Countess In, both of whom oppose him again tomorrow. Starecase showed his usual early speed in that encounter, but was no match for the winner when the real test case. In his first start of the current meeting, Starecase finished fifth in the Crete Inaugural Handicap, won by the Mikel Farms False. The Rando racer led for about five furlongs of the siixTfurlong sprint only to give way suddenly nearing the final sixteenth. Starecase gets in tomorrows race under 107 pounds in con-? trast to the 114-pound package~he was asked to shoulder in the Crete. Had Rough Trip, in Last Countess In finished dead last, in the Spring Handicap after winning her previous start. However, the VanBerg miss did have a rough trip that afternoon and is better than that race would indicate. Jockey John Adams will do the booting. Quihi was a disappointment in the Crete after arriving here fresh from a victory in Kentucky. It may have been that he did not like the extremely heavy strip which prevailed for his local debut. Job Dean Jessop again will be at the reins. Hard Toab raced creditably during the winter at Phoenix, Ariz., but since his arrival from the West has been unable to regain top form. He way unsuccessful in quest for a victory at Oaklawn Park and again was unable to visit the coveted circle at Sportsmans Park. The- pur-year-old colt won 11 races last year and must be regarded the dark horse should he display a partiality for the local strip. He will be ridden by Norman Cartwright. Mais Boy, former track record-holder at Washington Park, accounted for his first race of the year at Oaklawn Park. He was not raced since the close of the spring session and most likely has benefited from the rest. Kenneth Church will have the mount. Deal Me In wintered in the Chicago sector and will be making his initial start of the year. The four-year-old gelded son of Stagehand — Boiling Water was unsuccessful in 13 attempts as a three-year-old and it remains dubious that he will be able to cope with the talents of tomorrows rivals. His recent works have been satisfactory, but he probably will need one or more races to attain to perform.
