Little Doc Takes Measure of Dixville In Shively Purse at Churchill Downs Draws Off to Length and i Quarter Victory; Playboro Graduates in Initial Start By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 14. — Little Doc, a member of the Mrs. R. H. Lloyd Stable, proved best of the seven three-year-olds meeting here this afternoon in the featured Shively Purse. Benefitted by an unusually well-judged ride from apprentice Paul Ward, Little Doc sped to the ■finish of the six and one-half furlong headliner with slightly more than a length to spare over the B. and G. Stables favored Dixville, pacemaker for the major portion of the trip. Carl M. Grahams Sinn Fein ran third, a length and. one-half off the choice and a nose before Mrs. Herbert Herf f s Memphis, Tennessee-owned Glance, who lasted to salvage fourth money. Little Doc, a good winner at "the Keene-land meeting and second in his last local start, raced the" Shively Purse distance over the fast track in 1:18-%. The victor, a gelded son of Emileo and Valdina Fair, was a 29 to 10 second choice. Dixville was first to show in front when the Shively field left the stalls in good order and the G. and G. Stable colt went right on about his business, setting a stiff pace to the stretch. Dixville repulsed early challenges from Louis Hollenbachs Amafox and Glance, while Little Doc raced along steadily in fifth position next the inner rail. Turning for home, Dixville still held a clear lead, but Little Doc remained on the inside for the drive and it was apparent that the two leaders would battle it out for top honors. Ward worked diligently on the Lloyd gelding, his mount responding with a burst of speed, which was ample to put Dixville away. The latter colt raced well enough to take second, while Sinn Fein was along in time to nip Glance for the show. The Herff representative might have been a keener factor had he not drifted out in the final quarter mile. With only three days of the Downs spring meeting remaining, a crowd of approximately 8,500 witnessed the sport at the Central Avenue course today. Skies were clear during the earlier part of the program, but heavy cloud banks drifted over the track later in the afternoon. Playboro, making his initial appearance under colors, had the saddle services of Johnny Nazareth and was all out to take a head decision from A. F. Walls homebred colt, Scriptwriter, the favorite in the field of nine youngsters. J. Howard Rouses homebred, Set Shot, earned the show and was slightly more than a length off the choice and. two lengths in advance of R. L. Hallums Roll Bama. Playboro, lightly-regarded in the speculation, returned his straight pool backers 8.40. Thomas B. Cromwells Vinvic, with Alfred Popara at the reins, defeated seven other three-year-olds in the six-furlong second. Vinvic came, from off the early pace to nip Baylor O. Hickmans Ganja by a head margin, while a bit more than two lengths away Raymond Ankenbauers Fighting Mind, salvaged third. Vinvic responded readily when set down through the stretch and wore down the leaders in the last sixteenth of a mile. Steve Brooks, leading rider at the current meeting, added to his winning status, piloting E. R. Morris Gallant Dolly to a handy four-length conquest in the fourth event. Second honors in the six-furlong sprint went to K. S. Clevelands Hunters Glory, who was more than a length before Craigwood Stables favored Rena Pop at the final marker.
