■■ 4 Home-Made Wins Filly Division Of Belmonts National Stallion Vanderbilt Miss Overcomes i Unfavorable Rail Position To Beat Appian by Length By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 14. — Alfred G. Vanderbilts Home-Made overcame an unfavorable inside post position to win the fifth running of the filly division of the National Stallion Stakes today, outfinishing John C. Clarks Appian by a length. Ogden Phipps Flirtatious, the early pacemaker, finished three lengths farther back, a scant nose before Hal Price Headleys Aerolite. H. B. Del-mans Judy Dunstan, the favorite, swerved sharply at trie start, almost spilling Eddie Arcaro and finished last in the field of nine juvenile fillies, giving the impression that she may have bucked her shins. Erie Guerin rode Home-Made, who paid and was timed a creditable :59% for the five furlongs on the straight course, racing against a stiff breeze. Home-Made earned 8,410, plus a breeders award. The daughter of Occupy — Plucky Maid, by Ariel, won her debut at Santa Anita, then finished with a great rush to be narrowly beaten by Countess Jane in the Fashion Stakes here in her only other start. Crowd of 21,522 on Hand A crowd of 21,522 view the sport in bright, sunny, windy weather. When George Cassidy pressed his button, on the outskirts of Floral Park, Aerolite was briefly seen in the lead, closely followed by Home-Made, while .Judy Dunstan Continued on Page Thirty-Nine Home-MadeAnnexesFilly Half of National Stallion Vanderbilt Miss Shows Way to Appian on Belmont Straightaway Continued from Page One swerved sharply and dropped back. Arcaro said later that he was thrown against an assistant starter and almost out of the saddle. As the field came into view, Appian, racing in the middle of the track, had a slight lead over Flirtatious, who was racing on the outside, while Home-Made was moving up strongly on the insider followed by Aerolite, Our Cricket-, Grecian Queen, Judy Dunstan, Crouton and Belle Rebelle. Flirtatious took command approaching the stands, but her tenure was brief as Appian and Home-Made swept past her with authority. Appian fought gamely under punishment but was unable to hold Home-Made, who drew out gradually in the final yards. Their struggle carried the leaders clear of Flirtatious, who barely saved third honors from Aerolite, who raced evenly. None of the others were ever seriously in contention, with Judy Dunstan appearing to sulk when put under pressure above the eighth pole and dropping back to last place at the end. Several candidates for coming steeplechase stakes met in the Battleship, third event, with J. M. Mulfords Proceed scoring a mild upset. The Star Beacon gelding, who fell when leading at the final fence in his last start, made no mistakes today and triumphed by 10 lengths over Brook-meade Stables His Boots, who led A. .C. Randolphs Tellanrun by three and a half lengths. At the end of the about two miles, it was another 10 lengths back to A. Edward Masters Titien TJ., the favorite. Titien II, who was making his first start since last November, had speed for a half mile, jumped well -while dropping back to last place, then finished fairely well. Proceed was ably ridden by Charles Cushman, paid 0 and was timed in 3:47% bVer a fast track. There were three casualties in the Battleship, all at the eighth fence, where Flying Wing and CherweTl fell and Extra Points lost his rider. The fall proved fatal to Flying Wing, who was leading at the time, but had made a couple of mistakes. Flint Schulhofer escaped with bruises, as did Pat Smithwick and Scott Riles.
