Red Red Charger Charger Registers Registers in in Sun Sun Beau; Beau; Dark Dark Peter Peter Cleverly Cleverly Wins Wins Roseben Roseben Gratifies Patrons At Belmont Park Harborvale Gelding Defeats Northern Star by Three to Duplicate Toboggan Victory By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 21. — Harborvale Stables Dark Peter gratified the majority in the crowd of 22,-783 by winning the 13th running of the Roseben Handicap in clever style. Green-tree Stables Northern Star finished three lengths away in second place, a scant nose before Mrs. Jan Burkes Squared Away, who tired badly after setting the pace. Phantom Farms Nullify, the outsider of the field, was only half a length out of the money. Albert Widman rode Dark Peter, who paid .90. The time for the Roseben was 1:12%, the slowest in the history of the stake, but explainable by the slow track and strong head wind blowing up the Widener straightaway. Tea-Maker was the first to leave the gate far up the straight course, but Squared Away quickly opened a daylight lead and appeared to be going easily. Dark Peter was in second place, racing on the outside, followed by Tea-Maker and Northern Star, who were down on the inside. First Glance, Assignment and Nullify completed the field at this early stage. Squared Away Still in Front Squared Away continued to lead as the field approached the clubhouse, but began to shorten stride abruptly, and appeared to lose his action at the same time, as though suddenly lame. As Squared Away faltered, Dark Peter came on, despite swerving under Widmans whip, and drew out to score comfortably. Northern Star finished well, though needing the full treatment from Atkinsons whip to get up for second money, while Squared Away stopped badly. Nullify was unable to gain in the final furlong, while Tea-Maker tired after three furlongs and First Glance and Assignment showed nothing. George D. Widener, track president, presented D. Gregory Volkert, Edward Roberts and Frank Leatherbury, the three Mobile, Ala., shipping men who race as the Harborvale Stable, with a trophy in the win- Continued on Page Three Dark Peter Gains Clever, Popular Roseben Victory Favorite Beats Northern Star by Three on Belmont Straightaway Continued from Page One ners circle. It was Dark Peters second Widener Course stakes triumph in as many starts at this meeting, the son of Piping Rock-Dark Maiden, by Snark, having won the Toboggan on opening day, getting the same distance in 1:09%. Isidore Biebers King Jolie, a repeater, scored a popular victory in the Inroc Purse that preceded the Roseben, driving to the finish of the mile and a sixteenth a neck before Brookmeade Stables Closed Door with Eric Guerin hustling through the stretch. King Ranchs Armagh, the early pacemaker, was another four and a half lengths up the track, with Brandywine Stables Warpath a distant fourth. King Jolie paid .10 as the public choice. Daniel Saints French hurdler, Byng, who was heavily played for his recent American debut when obviously "short," showed the benefit Of that race by winning todays Speculate Purse by two and a half lengths from Happy Hill Farms Sonatine. James F. McHughs Reduce was another length and a half away and two lengths before W. C. MacMillen, Jr.s Le Faune. Sonatine and Reduce were both bothered considerably by Joseph Brant, who lost Jason Eaby early in .the race then continued to kibitz the field. George Foot rode Byng, who paid 5.60. The Fair Copy five-year-old had no respect for the early hurdles,-but his jumping improved after he hit a couple of hedges solidly. Mae West and Toquila, a heady combination if there ever was one, proved the right one in the Daily Double races, returning 3.10. Mae West was aided by Eddie Ar-caro in the opener, carrying W. Goadby Loews silks to a length score over Philip Godfreys Mirthful in the six-furlong opener and paid .50 straight. Jimmy Hardinbrook rode Toquila, who runs for Ethel D. Jacobs and ran down Willy Schwabs pacemaking Ringgoldian to take the second event by almost two lengths. T. P. Morgans Free Camp was backed into favoritism here, broke a little slowly and finished last. Toquila returned .80 as an almost equal choice.
