Marked Increase in Stake Nominations at Aqueduct Dwyer and Brooklyn, at 0,000, Draw 49 and 43, Respectively AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., May 21.— A check of nominations for the 16 stakes to be run during the 27-day summer meeting at Aqueduct, opening on June 12, shows a marked increase over that of last year, especially in the two 0,000 events— the Dwyer and Brooklyn. Eleven stakes will be contested on the flat and five through the field for 12,500 in added money The Dwyer, main event for three-year-olds, drew 49 nominees for the 1952 renewal against 29 for last season. The Brooklyn attracted 43 handicap performers this time in comparison with 26 in 1951. The opening day feature, the 0,000 added mile-and-a-sixteenth Queens County Handicap, closed with 40 entrants, an increase of seven. The Edgemere, usually a fall fixture, is on the summer schedule this year and attracted 47 hopefuls for the mile-and-a-quarter race, endowed at 5,-000. These two races are preps for the mile-and-a-quarter Brooklyn. The Shevlin, at a mile-and-a-sixteenth, brought out 45 aspirants for the 0,000 purse, six over 1951. Most of these are also named for the mile-and-a-quarter Dwyer. The largest lists were named for the three two-year-olds stakes — Tremont, Astoria and Great American. The 0,000 Tremont, for colts and geldings, closed with 98, a boost from 55; the 0,000 Astoria, restricted to fillies, jumped from 66 to 84 for this running, and the 5,000 Great American, open to both sexes, attracted 108 hopefuls, a gain of 18. The Gazelle, for three-year-old fillies, carrying 5,000 in added money, brought out 44 for the mile-and-a-sixteenth test, three more than last season. The revival of the 5,000 Vagrancy, last run in 1948, attracted 25 fillies and mares. Aqueducts famous sprint feature, the seven-furlong Carter Handicap, received an extra ,000 endowment this year, boosting it to the 5,000 class. Thirty-six answered the call, six more than last season. Of the five jumping races, two showed increases. The Aqueduct National Maiden Hurdle closed with 55 subscriptions, an increase of six, and the Hitchcock Steeplechase Handicap jumped from 22 to 34. The Amagansett dropped from 30 to 27; the Forget closed with 29 this year, having 31 I last year, and the Aqueduct Spring Maiden Steeplechase dwindled from 45 to 35.
