Biddy Jane Gains Head Score In Ran cocas at Garden State Cajole Is Second, I Salute Third as Countess Jane and Wise Scholar Go Unplaced By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 21. — J. R. Collins Biddy Jane proved gamely and decisively to be the best running over a muddy track in the Rancocas Stakes here this afternoon, but she was a tired horse after the race and showed it running to the winners circle. The well-rounded chestnut daughter of Psychic Bid — Melva Jane, by Wise Scholar — good breeding for muddy going — was faultlessly handled by jockey Lois C. Cook and she finished the five furlongs with head advantage over Hal Price Headleys Cajole. Brookfield Farms I Salute held on well to be third, another neck behind, while Leroy Hetzels Countess Jane cume on between horses to be a half length away from the pay-off money. The crowd of 18,573 attending this cloudy and cool afternoon placed the bulk of their wagering on E. K. Brysons Wise Scholar and Countess Jane, allowing the victorious miss to pay 5.80. Collinses Witness Triumph Biddy Janes portion of 0,700 from the gross purse of 4,325 more than doubled her former earnings for a net holding of 9,650. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Collins, of Detroit and Miami,, were on hand for the presentation of a silver plate made by Thomas J. Brogan of the New Jersey Racing Commission. Biddy Jane has a record of four triumphs in eight starts and, although she set a four and one-half furlongs track record at Gulfstream Park, this was her initial stakes victory. She was shipped in here for this race from Churchill Downs, where she~finished second to Bub-bley in the Debutante Stakes. Wise Scholar, who just galloped in the recent Bowie Kindergarten Stakes, had all of her vaunted speed and skimmed away ffom her 11 two-year-old filly rivals within the first few strides after starter George Palmer had executed a perfect start. I Salute, who had only won a maiden race prior to todays event, was closest to Wise Scholar, with a generous margin separating them from Biddy Jane. Countess Jane, the stalwart of New Yorkers, appeared to flounder slightly after getting away well. Countess Jane then raced between horses throughout and, after getting the feel of the course, finished well in an effort that was better than it appears on paper. The pace-setting Wise Scholar just fell apart when Nick Shuk went to work with his whip entering the stretch. I Salute was trying to hold on while acting a trifle green in front of the crowd, and Biddy Jane and Cajole started their moves* The ultimate winner had to be taken out strongly to come around the top pair, and hooked up with the slow-beginning Cajole three-sixteenths out. They "ding-donged" itTall the way to the finish, but Biddy Jane had the advantage and did not give an inch. » Jockey Charles Burr, who led the na- tional list last year, was going "great guns" today and further increased his margin over the local riders by scoring three victories in the early events.
