; 4 Six Steeplechasers Meet in Corinthian Titien II., Lone Fisherman, Navy Gun and Hot Entered; N. Y.A.C. Day at Belmont BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 21. — "The place will be jumping" at Belmont Park tomorrow, to coin a phrase. The feature event is the Corinthian Steeplechase and it is also N. Y. Athletic Club day, with 1,000 or so members of that strenuous organization attending what has become an annual gala. In addition to the ,500 Corinthian at about two miles, tomorrows program features the N.Y.A.C. H. L. Lindquist Purse, of the same value at a mile and a sixteenth and the ,500 N.Y.A.C. Norton Memorial at six furlongs. A field of six has been named for the Corinthian, headed by A. Edward Masters Titien II. with 147 pounds including Evan Jackson. Titien n. who has been the champion hurdler for a couple of seasons and won last years Meadow Brook Chase in his only 1951 start over fences, was a beaten favorite in his seasonal debut last week. This was the Battleship Chase and about all that can be said for the Frenchman is that he took his fences cleanly. The Battleship was a comparatively slow race and Proceed, who won it by 10 lengths, has never had any pretensions to class. Whether or not Titien II., who was beaten a couple of dozen lengths, can improve enough to turn back the caliber of rivals he meets tomorrow seems doubtful. The five opposing Titien II. in this forty-seventh running of the Corinthian are P. Ambrose Clarks Lone Fisherman, 145; L. W. Jennings Navy Gun, 143; Rigan Mc-Kinneys Hot, 140; Brookmeade Stables Flaming Comet, 138; and Keith Chandors Fonda, 130. Ran Second in Appleton Lone Fisherman made a promising reentry on May 8 when he finished second to Jam in the Appleton Memorial with Hot and Flaming Comet rather close behind him. Those two both had the benefit of a race, which should more than compensate for the moderate weight shift against Lone Fisherman tomorrow. Navy Gun, who will be making his seasonal debut, was scratched from earlier engagements at this meeting. He "got good" last fall, finishing second to Oedipus in the Grand National, then winning stakes here and at Pimlico in his last two starts. Pat Smithwick is slated to ride Willie "Deacon" Jones charge, who shapes up as the one to beat. Jennings and Jones will also be represented in the Lindquist Purse by Eolus, a reformed jumper who led all the way in a test at a mile and a furlong on May 8, for a surprising seasonal debut. Eolus is badly placed in the weights in relation to Putnam Stables Combat Boots and Circle M Farms War Poppy, who followed him in that race. Combat Boots, who was beaten a head, gives only one pound to Eolus, instead of 14, while War Poppy is at level weights with the Battleship gelding, instead of conceding eight pounds. War Poppy came back to beat Arise in a mile race here on May 13. Abe Levinsons High Bracket, who is in with a feathery 106 tomorrow, including the apprentice allowance for Henry Schab, was a fairly close third in that test and is always dangerous under light packages. The others in the Lindquist are Jack Amiels Count Turf , the 1951 Derby winner and possible favorite; Lazy F Ranchs Out Point, »who turned in an excellent effort for his first race of the year; Marise Farms aging Uncle Edgar and C. B. Bohns Dart By. It shapes up as an interesting test. The Norton Memorial brings together a clever band of sprinters, including Tripoli, Vincent X. F., All is Well, Sagittarius, Sunshine Nell and Atalanta and promises to be another highly speculative contest.
