Why Won t Other Clubs Trade With Us? -Cries Casey Stengel Yank Pilot Names Players * Who Have Made Good After Being Sent to Rival Teams By ED SAINSBURY United Press Sports Writer ยป Manager Casey Stengel had no apologies for the unaccustomed fourth place position of his New York Yankees, but he asked plaintively why wont other major league teams trade with his organization. "We havent done them any wrong," he said. "Look at all the fellows weve turned loose that are doing pretty good wherever they are. "Now St. Louis is a lot better, and that catcher we sent down there, ClinV Courtney, has been helping them a lot. He hits a home run against us arid beats us. Then another game he hits a double and beats us. "Now is that giving them something thats bad. And theyve got that fellow pitching Tommy Byrne. They said he wasnt pitching for us, he wasnt much of a pitcher. Well, he sure pitches like hell against us. "Look at Washington. I gave them Archie Wilson and Jackie Jensen for Irv Noren, and that Bucky Harris he made a deal with the. people here for the centerfielder Jim Busby and now hes got a whole new outfield juid theyre playing pretty good ball. Washington Aided by Yanks "Theyre all fast and they can throw, and hit pretty good. That Washingtons a pretty good team now. .And they all got help from the Yankees. "They said I didnt give Frank Shea a chance to pitch for me and hes won three straight for Washington. Well, when you got guys like Allie Reynolds, Eddie Lopat and Vic Raschi, well, you got to work them regular. How* you going to put Shea or anybody else in to pitch very often? "We can afford to let come of those out-, fielders go. Ive got a lot of good outfielders and I can switch them around. But first basemen, I dont have too many. ""Rip Collins has got a bad arm. Johnny Hopp cant run and Johnny Mize has got a bad leg. Ive used 24 different line-ups in 28 games this year, -and maybe if we all-get well, I can get a line-up and stay with it. "But why wont these fellows trade with us? We aint goin to hurt them any?" One result of Stengels trades partially solved his first base problem. Noren has been playing the position instead of his usual outfield berth.
