! | - _4 Ready for Detroit Track Inaugural Marlman, Dees, Lawrence, Battle and Weitzel Units Arrive for Opening Tomorrow By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT, Mich., May 21.— With the inaugural of the Michigan 1952 thoroughbred racing season but two days away, officials and turfmen at the spacious and ultra modern Detroit Race Track were quite active this morning as they made preparations for the Friday inaugural day program. Racing secretary and handi-capper Charles J. McLennan and his assistant, Sidney S. Brown, were lining up a splendid card, which is to be headlined by the Belle Isle Purse, a six-furlong sprint for three-year-olds and older. McLennan and Brown also were optimistic regarding a speedy field of three-year-olds for the one mile, Livonia Handicap, which is to have its decision Saturday. In the meantime at the big plant on Schoolcraft and Middlebelt Roads, thoroughbreds continue to put in their appearances from Eastern, Illinois, and Kentucky racing centers. Some of the latest stables to arrive are those trained by W. J. Marl-man, Raleigh Dees, H. H. "Pete" Battle, j David L. Weitzel, and John Lawrence. I Marlman, who looks after the Sunny-brook Farm Stable racers, maintained by the Ohio sportsman, R. A. Parachek, came in from Churchill Downs with his string. The better-than-average three-year-old colt, Thistle War, a probable Livonia Handicap starter, heads the unit and others are Black Bantam, a top sprinter; the juvenile miss, Sunnybrook Sue; Bold King, and Leading Man. Several others slated to campaign here under Paracheks silks are due momentarily from Sunny-brook Farm, which is located near Toledo. Dees Has Nine in String Dees, who is well known to Motor City racing patrons, is expected to do well here this season with his nine-horse stable. Included in the Dees-trained barrTare Mrs. J. H. Woodcocks Bold Sab, Epic King, Sir Walter R., and Kitty Whiskers; War Booty and Shibboleth, the property of Normbert Young and Charles iBumbashoot, ~ Mile; Miss Margaret Miles Bellevue, and G. S. Kilpatricks Howdy Doody. Although E. E. Dale Shaffer, president of the Michigan Racing Association, recently suspended his operations at Coldstream Stud, the Shaffer silks are not to be retired from the turf and an even dozen horses are slated to campaign at he local oval under the popular red and white colors. Battle brought in Bully Boy, Woe Is Me, Scherzo, a good winner at the Churchill 1 Downs meet; Sweet Patootie, Hit The Spot, and Fiddle along with several others to race here for Mrs. Shaffer. Weitzel, one of the Detroit Race Tracks regulars, registered his own Lilac, Mrs. John H. Clarks Mulatto, a good stakes winner during 1951; Frank Rand, Sr.s Imperial Rock, and Mrs. Betty Weitzels Grey Tint. For the R and H Stable, Weitzel brought Beryldon, Straddle, Hot Chocolate, Jacomarty, and Myrmidon, a good route performer. Lawrence conditions the Evans Stable, which is owned by R. and J. Evans, the establishment shipping in from Churchill Downs. Desert Raid, successful in a Downs outing; Allocation, Stimboro, Fourteen Grand, and Brawner are members of the Lawrence-trained unit. James Gruber, official timer at the Detroit Race Track and also at Hazel Park, which track will conclude the Michigan season with a 56-day session, announced this morning that the work tab has been gradually becoming longer as the various trainers arrive here with their charges. Gruber also is of the opinion that the local racing strip is in much better condition this year, pointing out that it not only is quite fast but safe as well. Post time Friday for the inaugural day program and for the Saturday sport is set for 2:00 p.m., EST and there has been an unusually large number of requests for box and reserved seats. The Tack Room cafe, located in the club house section and maintained by the Turf Catering Company, report many luncheon and dinner reservations for the Friday and Saturday cards. W. J. MARLMAN— Arrived at Detroit with the Sunnybrook Farm stable horses.
