Cardinals Overpower Cubs, 8 to 5 Sixteen-Hit Attack Includes 3 Homers Staley Records Eighth Win; Klippstein, Schultz, Leonard Victims of Redbirds Power By the United Press The St. Louis Cardinals hammered out 16 hits to outslug the Chicago Cubs, 8 to 5, before 8,173 fans at Wrigley Field yesterday. Although blasted for seven hits, including three homers and three doubles, Gerry Staley went the route for the fourth time this season to record his eighth victory against two defeats. Johnny Klippstein, Bob Schultz and "Dutch" Leonard were the victims of the Redbirds assault, which ended a three-game winning streak for the Cubs. It was Klippsteins third loss, compared to as many wins. Enos Slaughter paced the Cards with four hits, including his second homer of the season, while Stan Musial chipped in his fourth circuit drive and Hal Rice socked his first. "Red" Schoendiensts pair of doubles were the only other extra base blows for the victors. Bill Serena drove in three runs with a pair of homers, his second and third of the season. Hank Sauer knocked in the" other two Cub tallies with a single and his tenth round-trip blast to increase his runs-batted-in total to 40, best in the majors. Score in Opening Inning The Cards picked up a run in the first on Schoendiensts double and infield hits by Musial and Slaughter, and pecked away for one in the second and another in the fourth. The Cubs came up to tie the score in their half of the fourth as Gene Hermanski singled and raced home on Sauers single. Dee Fondy forced Sauer but Serena then belted the first of his pair of homers. However, Klippstein was chased in the fifth in which the outcome was settled. Hal Rice and Tommy Glaviano got the round under way with singles. Schultz retired Del Rice and fanned Staley, but Eddie Stanky hit a run-scoring single to center. On a cutoff play the ball beat Glaviano back to second by 10 feet but the runner made it The Cubs drew within one run of a tie as Sauer and Serena each hit for the circuit in the sixth. But Slaughter and Hal Rice jarred Leonard for their homers in the eighth and Staley, who walked no one and fanned one, proceeded to set he last 10 Cubs down in order with help of a leaping catch by Musial.
