Gushing Oil to Run Friday If Possible Condition of Injured Foot To Determine His Starting Status in Peabody Memorial HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 27. Sam E. Wilson Jrs Gushing Oil, winner of the Louisiana and Arkansas derbys and the Blue Grass Stakes, will run in the 5,000 Peabody Memorial next Friday "if possible," his Texas owner said today. The qualifying clause of Wilsons statement was due to a stone bruise which his colt picked up, causing a slow developing infection in his left hind foot. Wilson believes the bruise occurred in the Arkansas Derby on March 29. While Gushing Oil gave no indication of soreness until after the Preakness of May 17, his owner now thinks the foot was hurting him in that race and the preceding Kentucky Derby, in both of which he finished unplaced without being a serious contender. After the Preakness the injured member was opened and drained, and it immediately began to heal. Meanwhile, Gushing Oil, who, like his owner, does much of his traveling by air, was flown from Baltimore to Hawthorne. Otherwise fit from his rather vigorous campaign, the son of Easy Mon-Dulcet, by Challenger H. needed little work in the way of preparation for the one and one-eighth miles Peabody, Wilson said. He will be breezed and blown out, after which the condition of the injured foot will determine his Peabody status. Will Pass Up Belmont Stakes In any event, he will be given a rest after the Memorial Day race, and will pass up his engagement in the Belmont Stakes on June 7. Gushing Oils nomination for the Peabody was one of the first received by Peter J. ODonnell, general manager of Lincoln Fields. In the meantime, other candidates for the Peabody, first three-year-old stake of the Illinois season, are in the final stage of preparation for the holiday attraction. Among the most prominent is the chestnut colt, Marcador, owned by L. R. Allison and M. R. Prestridge, of New Mexico. Marcador is by the Kentucky Derby-Preakness winner, Bold Venture, sire of the Derby-Preak-ness-Belmont winner, Assault, and the Derby-Belmont winner, Middleground. Marcador is a "horemens horse" with that "race horse walk and swing," which is often a mark of both competence and confidence. He won two races at two for King Ranch, was then taken to Santa Anita to begin his three-year-old campaign after winning his last two-year-old race on December 31 at the Los Angeles track. He was sold to his present owners and won successively on April 5 and April 19, the Oakland Handicap and the Golden Gate Derby. Marcador is stabled at Arlington Park, where trainer N. R. McLeod took his horses after arriving in Chicago. Marcadors sta-blemate Dark Count, another Peabody eligible, ran a disappointing race and finished last in the Peabody Prep, won by Reverie Knoll Farms Smoke Screen last Saturday. But the son of Count Gallahad Reigh Diana, won the San Luis Rey Stakes at Santa Anita on February 27, and was beaten only a neck by Almighty in a handicap at Golden Gate before shipping to Chicago. g
