Blue Lantern Charges Up to Score Has Head Margin On Bank Account Favored Penocc Runs Third At Garden State; Fernandez Times His Move Perfectly By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 27. Biue Lanterns late rush proved effective here today in the featured Wynd-moor Purse, the J. Gavegnano veteran getting up in the last couple of yards to win by a head over E. M. OBriens Bank Account. A length and a half further back came Mrs. C. Lyons Penocc, the favorite in the field of eight. Blue Lantern was ridden by Fernando Fernandez and paid .40 for his six-furlong trip in 1:12 over a track termed good. . A crowd estimated at 18,300 turned out as the sport entered the last week of the meeting and a warm, bright sunny day was the order for them. Blue Lantern, a five-year-old by Mah-moud Brushup, by Sweep, is a half-brother to the great War Admiral, but can hardly be said to approach anything that the Riddle star could do. This was the first victory of the year in four starts for the Gavegnano racer, but he won four out of. nine last year. Runner-Ups Good Effort For a time it looked like Bank Account might win her first race of the year as the filly put up a corking race and was only beaten in the last, few parcels of ground. The Shut Out miss is hardly ever headed in any of her races, at least in the early part, but by the same token she rarely is ever in, front at the finish. Today it looked like she might have made it. Bank Account, as per custom, was away on top, but Telenews went right with her and by the time they hit the far turn had succeeded in heading the OBrien miss. But rounding the turn, Bank Account came, on again and dispatched Telenews readily to assume the lead again. The favored Penocc, who had been racing in third spot, away on the outside, lodged his bid at the head of the stretch and was pressing Bank Account. It was here that Blue Lantern entered the picture. Fernandez kept his horse in the fourth hole until ready to ,run, then charged down on the outside of the pack with ground-eating strides. The filly still looked like she might have made it a sixteenth out, but Fernandez was working with considerable zeal and got the job done. C. C. BoshamersFast Jeep finally made good in the third start of his career after failing when favored in his previous races. The Jeep Judys Girl, chestnut won by two and a half lengths over H. B. Cohens Buck n Gee arid Mrs. S. G. Stecklers. Silver Spot. The start was held up when Alsab Farms Waza Rose threw Jack Martin at the gate and eluded the outrider, circling the track to the clubhouse turn. Waza Rose was scratched and those who backed her had their wagers refunded. She was quoted at 99 to 1 on the board. Fernandez made it a triple for the day when he scored with W. E. Browns Bit o Whiz, good for 8.20, in the sixth race. He had previously won the third with Flying Weather and the fifth with Blue Lantern. Bit o Whiz also made it two winners for trainer Tom Barry who saddled Blue Lantern.
