Connolly and Todd Swamp English Tennis Opponents SURBITION, Eng., May 27 UP. Young U. S. Tennis champion Maureen Connolly of San Diego, Calif., breezed into the third round of her first foreign tennis tournament today and veteran Patricia Todd of La Jolla, Calif ., did just as well. Miss Connolly swamped Audrey Housely, 6-1, 6-0, and Miss Todd downed Peggy Dawson Scott, 6-0, 6-1. Miss Connolly lost the third game of the first set because of some bad luck on netted balls, but beyond that she was never in trouble. Her powerful drives from both sides into the corners of the opposite court kept her opponent puffing futilely throughout the match. Mrs. Todds backhand passing game was too much for her foe. Defending champion Helen Fletcher was eliminated, 6-1, 6-2, by British Wightman Cup star Jean Quertier Rinkel.
