UNITED PRESS J NEWS ■ — — — — -BRIEFS Russia Sending New Ambassador Here WASHINGTON, D. C, June 6. — Soviet Russia is sending a new ambassador to Washington — probably George Zarubin, who was Russian envoy to London until recently. Zarubin was Russian ambassador to Canada when the Soviet spy case in ; Ottawa broke there shortly after World War II. The present Soviet ambassador here, Alexander S. Panyushkin, announced today he is "leaving the United States forever" Sunday to take a new Moscow assignment. Ridgway Visits Scene of Daring Jump AROOMANCHES, Prance, June 6.— Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway, supreme commander of the New Allied Armies in Europe, relived in memory today the daring jump which eight years ago made him the first American general to land in the invasion of Europe. Ridgway, his pretty wife at his side, visited the cow pasture near Sainte Mere de lEglise, back of the Omaha and Utah invasion beaches,- where he landed four hours before H-Hour on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Western Union Asks Rate Boost WASHINGTON, D. C, June 6.— Western Union Telegraph Co. asked the Federal Communications Commission today for permission to boost rates 9.3 per cent July 6, so it may begin paying wage increases to employes under an agreement which ended a strike last month. Seeks Possible Koje Escape Tunnels KOJE ISLAND, Korea, June 6.— British troops dug for possible escape tunnels outside prisoner of war compound 66 today while the North Korean officers inside brazenly displayed metal-tipped spears. In other compounds, including No. 85 which is so solidly Communist it has not been I screened, prisoners set up maximum "monitor" details to prevent escapes and to watch for any move by Allied guards. I I Taft Fayors Compromise on Splits INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., June 6. — Sen. Robert A. Taft said today he would "like to compromise on a fair basis" with Dwight D. Eisenhower any Republican delegate factional splits like the one in Texas. Taft said at a news conference preceding his bid for Indianas 32 national convention delegates who will, be chosen tonight and tomorrow that he favored compromise in "all contests where there are serious legal difference." American Planes Down Seven Red Craft SEOUL, Korea, June 6. — American Sabre-jets shot down seven Communist MIG-15S today and damaged two more in two blazing dogfights over Northwest Korea. Sixty-four F86s tangled with 28 MIGS that were trying to intercept United Nations fighter-bombers on rail-cutting and supply attacks. Airlines Employes Refuse Work Order NEW YORK, N. Y., June 6.— Airport employes of American Airlines here refused to return to work today despite an order to do so from their Union officials. Nearly 1,000 non-flying employes, members -of the Transport. Workers Union CIO , were volved in the work stoppage which began Wednesday in a dispute over travel time. Russia Lifts Blockade of American Enclave BERLIN, Germany, June 6. — Russia yielded today -to two American demands to lift the blockade, of an American enclave in East Berlin and to get her armed sentries put of a U. S. sector border district. The Soviets pulled their sentries out of the Lake Griebnitz area on the border of the U. S. sector of Berlin and East Germany just 24 hours before the deadline set for their ouster by Maj. Gen. Lemuel A. Mat-i hewsoh.
