British Golfers Lead U.S. In Curtis Cup Play, 2 to 1 MUIRFIELD, Scotland, June 6 UP. — Britains women amateur golfers, seeking their first victory in the international series, gained a 2 to 1 lead over the United States today, winning two of the three "Scotch foursomes" matches, which opened the two-day Curtis Cup competition. Claire Doran of Cleveland, and Marjorie * Lindsay of Decatur, m., scored the only American triumph, defeating Prances Stephens of England, and Mrs. George Valentine of Scotland, 6 and 4, in the opening match. But the narrow, bunker-pitted fairways of Muirf ield, and the grim determination of their opponents proved too much for the other two U. S. teams. Jean Donald, Scotlands amateur champion, and Elizabeth Price of England defeated U. S. champion Dorothy Kirby of Atlanta, Ga., and Grace Demoss of Cor-vallis, Ore., 3 and 2, to even the score, and then Moira Paterson of Scotland, and Phil-omena Garvey of Ireland beat Polly Riley of Port Worth, and Pat OSullivan of Orange, Conn., 2 to 1, in a close, gruelling battle. i
