Oedipus Assigned Top Weight Of 163 for Temple Gwathmey BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., , June 6. — Mrs. Ogden Phipps steady Oedipus, steeeplechasings Horse of the Year in 1951, tops 22 winged thoroughbreds named for the June 11 renewal of the 5,000 Temple Gwathmey Handicap, to be decided closing afternoon of the United Hunts two-day racing season at Belmont Park. The six-year-old son of Blue Larkspur has been assigned the impost of 163 pounds for the "about two and a quarter miles" distance, and is asked to spot his rivals chunks of weight ranging from 10 to 33 pounds. He legitimately earned the honor following wins a year ago in such steeplechase classics as the Corinthian, Beverwyck, Broad Hollow, Brook and Grand National. In the latter he packed 165 pounds to score. J. McHughs vastly improved Jam, a two-time winner this season, was allotted 153 pounds when steeplechase racing secretary John E. Cooper announced weights for the stake. This is four pounds more than the 149 which is to be carried by L. W. Jennings Navy Gun, winner of the Temple Gwathmey a year ago.
