Hanover Gets First N Pre-Derby Prep Tonight Pacer Has Doctor Cooper, Rush Hour ond Atomic Might to Beat MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood, HI., June 6. — A new threat will be added to the Chicago Pacing Derby picture tomorrow night when H. R. Warrens H. D. Hanover opens his pre-derby campaign at Maywood Park. H. D. Hanover will face Doctor Cooper, Atomic Might, Rush Hour, Tempered Volo, and Ladys Leon in the featured eighth race, a mile pace worth ,250. It will be the first start of the season for H. D. Hanover and his first appearance in the Chicago area. Trainer-driver Edgar Leonard has trained the four-year-old colt under wraps this spring in downstate Lincoln, 111. As a three-year-old, H. T . Hanover collected a healthy 8,000 while winning 10 of 22 starts for owner Warren, an East Moline, 111., businessman. Included in his string is a victory over Hanover Shoe Farms Tar Heel in the Grand Circuits ,000 Stallion Stakes at DuQuoin, 111. It was one of the few defeats ever suffered by Tar Heel, who is expected here in time for the 0,000 added Chicago Pacing Derby, June 20. H. D. Hanover bettered the 2:00 mark for the first time while winning at Lexington, Ky., last August. He is a son of Billy Direct, holder of the worlds record for the paced mile at 1:55. Movie actor Charles Coburns Rush Hour, Otis Andersons Atomic Might, and Raleigh Pollards Doctor Cooper already have established themselves as top derby contenders. Atomic Might has won half his eight Maywood starts, and owns the fastest mile of the meeting at 2:04%. Doctor Cooper equalled that time at Maywood in 1951, but driver Tom Pollard hasnt extended him below 2:08 in three preliminary starts this year. Rush Hour established himself as a 2 minute miler while campaigning at Santa Anita. Maywood climaxes the eighth week of its 10 week meeting assured of the most successful spring session in its seven-year history. Mutuel handles are averaging more than 80,000 nightly, and attendance figures are approximately 6,000.
