Eastern Jockeys to Ride, Hollywood Official States Stewart Says Hes Been Informed Tanforan Boys Wont Take Mounts BULLETIN NEW YORK, N. Y., May 7.— Sterling Young, national secretary of the Jockeys Guild, today denied that he had given "full clearance" to James Stewart, general manager of Hollywood Park, to obtain riders from the East for the meeting opening at the coast track on Tuesday. Young said, "I told htm that the Jockeys Guild is completely neutral in this dispute, but that it has no control over decisions the jockeys wish to make on their own." HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., May 7. — A number of jockeys are coming out to Hollywood Park to ride at the meeting which will start Tuesday, general manager James D. Stewart said today. "Because of the flat statement to me of Bert Thompson on April 20 that none of the boys riding at Tanforan would come Continued on Page Forty -Two Eastern Jockeys to Ride, Hollywood Official States Stewart Says Hes Been Informed Tanforan Boys Wont Take Mounts Continued from Page One to Hollywood Park unless HBPA demands were met, we have found it necessary to obtain riders from other parts of the counry." Stewart said. "The many owners who intend to race at our meeting are now assured of having capable boys handling their horses." Thompson, who is western manager of the Jockeys Guild, made this statement to Stewart, the latter said, despite the fact that Eddie Arcaro, national president of the Jockeys Guild, had previously issued a statement that his organization would remain neutral. Arcaro had written Hollywood Park that the Jockeys Guild was a charitable and welfare organization for its members and its board of directors had voted not to take sides in any controversy between management and horsemen. However, Arcaro told a reporter for this newspaper that the jockeys, as individuals, are free to make their own decisions. Stewart said that the action of Hollywood Park in obtaining jockeys from outside of California had been cleared with Sterling Young, national secretary of the Guild and its eastern manager. Obtaining jockeys from eastern tracks is also being done with the full cooperation of the managements of these tracks, he said. "It may prove to be a very healthy stimulus to racing in California to introduce into our sport some new riders who have shown their ability on the eastern circuit," added Stewart. "Naturally we are not taking top names from any track that might interfere with their drawing power, but we will have very capable boys." Stewart said that riders are now on their way here from Maryland, New Jersey and New york tracks. The total number is not known, except that it will be sufficient to handle the meeting, he said, and the names of the riders will not be divulged until they arrive. In regard to financial arrangements, it was learned that the eastern riders will be assured of income of 00 per week while •they are -at Hollywood Park. The track guarantees that they will make this amount and will pay them the difference if their riding fees do not reach this figure. Hollywood Park had close to a 1,000 horses on the grounds, according to racing secretary and handicapper John Malavius, and was in shape for the opening of the meeting on Tuesday.
