Paul Francolon, Ex-French Rider, Makes Presentation BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 7. — The presentation of the trophy after the running of the International Steeplechase Handicap today was made by Paul Francolon, a former star French jockey. Francolon, a World War n. veteran, whose racing career dates back to 1935, was known in Fench and British turf circles as the two-time winner of the Grand Prix de Paris and of the Prix de lArc de Triomphe. His career was cut short in 1946 when a fall from a horse resulted in a spinal injury that made him a helpless paraplegic. His trip to the United States was suggested by Dr. Howard Rusk, director of the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation part of New York University-Bellevue Medical Center and medical consultant to the World Veterans Federation. Dr. Rusk met and examined Francolon following a lecture he gave in Paris last July under the sponsorship of the World Veterans Federation. He underwent several operations at the University Hospital and was then transferred to the centers Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for physical and occupational therapy and intense training in walking. Expressing his gratitude toward all who had made his trip possible, Francolon said he would do his best to profit from the rehabilitation training he has received and added that he hoped other rehabilitation opportunities would soon be available in France for other paraplegic veterans. Francolon returns to Paris next Tuesday to begin a new and brighter life.
