Rains, Holding Track Hamper Fort Miami Card Favorite Horses and Jockeys Hold Up Despite Conditions By R. E. HURLEY Staff Correspondent PORT MIAMI, Maumee, Ohio, May 7.— Drizzling rains and a slight chill held the crowd down to 1,403 here today and the heavy, holding track proved a real detriment to the racing times. Despite the adverse conditions, the favorite horses and the favorite riders, Howard Craig and Gene Martin, held up fairly well in the first races of the day with leading rider Craig scoring his 27th victory of the meeting aboard the favored Dye in the first race, to return .60 to the chilled partisans. It took Dye 1:11 to tour the five furlongs, but he was five lengths clear at the end of his victorious tour of the heavy oval. Martin got Pair Babe, second successful favorite, home by two lengths in the fourth event as the Side Boy— Fair Jule filly finally left the maiden ranks after three consecutive seconds at the course. The honest filly required 1:20% for the six-furlong jaunt, but she kept doggedly to her task. She paid .60 to her followers in the crowd who had the determination to stay with her. It was win No. 14 for Martin, who is staying close to Craig in the battle for ilding honors.
