Hollywoods Directors Turn Down Murphys Suggestion SANTA BABARA, Calif., May 7.— The Hollywood Turf Clubs board of directors turned down racing board chairman Dwight Murphys request that Hollywood Park adopt the 4-3-2.7 formula on purses which it adopted for all meetings following the impending Hollywood session. Murphy stated in his wire that he had been guaranteed by Robert O. Read, national president of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association, that such a formula would be acceptable to the horsemen. The directors stated in their wire to Murphy that they "have decided it inadvisable to make any change in the program approved by your board." The Hollywood directors reply to Murphy follows: "We have discussed your wire of May 4 suggesting another increase in our stakes and purse program and have decided it inadvisable to make any change in the program approved by your board. You will recall that we voluntarily made an increase of 00,000 which at the time you indicated was substantial and and highly satisfactory. The stakes and purse program was then reaffirmed with our racing license April 20 by your board. In view of this we have decided to conduct our race meeting on the basis of the license as issued and reaffirmed and respectfully urge your board to give us your full suport in carrying out this program. We, too, are concerned about the adverse publicity and hope that your board will strongly urge the sources from which this emanates to modify statements detrimental to racing. In spite of our decision we appreciate your efforts to meditate this controversy." In commenting on the Hollywood Park reply, Murphy said, "Im sorry the controversy couldnt be settled amicably rather than have existing differences continue." Murphy called attention to one inaccuracy in the Hollywood telegram. The Hollywood Park license was issued March 17, 1953, not April 20 as quoted in the telegram.
