► 4 Native Dancers Performances Highlight of Jamaica Meeting Scored in Gotham and Wood;* Vanderbilt, Winfrey, Guerin All Head Respective Fields Jamaicas golden jubilee spring meeting, comprising 30 days and which concluded last Tuesday, drew attendance of 854849 fans. This figure represented a daily average attendance of 28,495, slightly under the 29,233 mark enjoyed by the track during the previous season, but better than the 26,900 daily average turnout in 1951. This springs Jamaica meeting comprised 30 days, against a corresponding 24 days last season and 36 for two years ago. Highlighting the entire meeting, of course, were the two victorious appearances of the then undefeated 1952 two-year-old champion, Native Dancer, in the Gotham Stakes and Wood Memorial. Native Dancer picked up an even 7,000 in the Wood. Those twin triumphs enabled the gray colts owner, Alfred G. Vanderbilt, to emerge as the leading money-winning owner of the meeting with a bankroll of 81,705. Vanderbilts earnings far outstripped the 0,200 that Mrs. Ethel duPont Weir compiled for runner-up laurels, mainly on the strength of Royal Vales success over C. V. Whitneys Cold Command in the 0,000 added Gallant Fox Handicap last Saturday. Naturally, Native Dancers duo of victories in as many Jamaica starts left him at the top of the leading money-winning horses list with 11,500 to his credit. Royal Vale earned 9,600 in his Gallant Fox victory, plus an earlier third-place finish. Laffangos score in the second section of the Gotham helped boost his winnings to 9,900, while Cold Command was the fourth biggest money gleaner with 8,575. The Whitney four-year-old won three straight races, including the Blackstock Handicap on April 27, before bowing to Royal Vale last Saturday. The Blackstock, incidentally, was named in honor of William Collins Whitneys winner of the Excelsior Handicap which featured the opening day program at Jamaica on April 27, 1903. Mutuel Handle of 3,336,667 Jamaicas pari-mutuel handle reached 3,336,667 against 8,986,553 for the 24 days last year and the 6,321,859 that flowed through the windows in the spring of 1951. Broken down, this entailed a daily average mutuel handle of ,444,556 for the 30 days. The 24 days of 1952 saw the daily average reach ,457,773, while it was ,-120,051 in 1951. A total of ,422,935 gross was distributed to horsemen this season, the net dis-. tribution hitting ,337,900. Percentage of winning favorites again was high, 94 choices in the 240 races run getting to the charmed circle for a .39 mark. Victorious second choices won 46 events, while winning outsiders were successful on 101 occasions. Twenty-one odds-on horses got down in front first; 20 at less than even money failed to win. There was one dead-heat for first place recorded during the 240 races. Eric Guerin, contract rider for Vanderbilt, finished atop the jockey standings with 30 victories in 104 mounts for a percentage of .29. Eddie Arcaro, the ol stakes specialist, while accepting only 30 mounts during the meeting he was at Keeneland and Churchill a good portion of the meetings duration, won with eight of those mounts, for a .27. percentage. Willie Lester was runner-up to Guerin with 26 successes in 152 tries. Bill Winfrey reflected the highly successful Vanderbilt campaign at Jamaica, in addition to Native Dancers duo of triumphs, by heading the trainer parade with 13 winners. Winfreys total was two more than Ed Jacobs could muster, and three more Continued on Page Thirty-Seven Native Dancer Big Horse Of Meeting at Jamaica Won Gotham, Wood; Vanderbilt, Winfrey, Guerin Top Their Fields Continued from Page Four than the once perennial national leader, Hirsch Jacobs, clustered.
