Royal Bay Gem Will Go in Jersey Chesapeake Victor Due at Track Today Starts in 0,000 Garden State Race Saturday Before Seeking Preakness May 23 WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. Jā May 7. ā Saturdays twelfth running of the 0,000 added Jersey Stakes assumed increased importance this morning with the announcement that Eugene Constantin, Jrs. Royal Bay Gem will arrive here from Pimlico tomorrow with the Jersey as his first objective before again challenging his Kentucky Derby rivals in the Preakness on May 23. The information was received by racing secretary M. C. "Ty" Shea from trainer Clyde Troutt who phoned to have a stall bedded down and ready. Royal Bay Gem, who finished fourth in the Derby, is almost certain to be the starting high-weight under the allowance conditions of the mile and a furlong local fixture with an impost of 118 pounds. Robert P. Levys Hueso, impressive victor of the Jersey Trial two days ago and apparently the most accomplished of his rivals, will carry 116. Combest to Ride The invading son of Royal Gem II. ā Bayadere, by Chance Play will be ridden by Jimmy Combest, who has handled him in all of his races since last September. He could not reach Dark Star, Native Dancer and Invigorator after a sluggish beginning and a circuitous journey in the Kentucky Derby, but he was making up ground at the end. He won the Cheasapeake Stakes at Bowie prior to his effort at Churchill Downs, won the Everglades Stakes at Hia-leah and finished second to Straight Face in the Flamingo. Trio Stables Laffango would unquestionably be his strongest opponent in the Jersey, but, although the Errard colt is stabled here at Garden State, he is still sidelined with a calcium deposit in his ankle and has not been under tack in a coupfe of weeks. Duke K. is being sent in from New York by trainer Syl Veitch for owner C. V. Whitney, and John W. Nizlek has already arrived with Mr. Jamieson. Brookmeade Stables County Clare qualified for the Jersey by winning a mile and a sixteenth event here last week, and yesterday he displayed sharp speed working a handy five furlongs over a sloppy track in 1:00, flat. The foreign importation, Skoal, also rates consideration for his owner E. P. Bixer. and he is expected to also come down from New York. Other possible starters on Saturday are Mrs. Edward Laskers By Zeus, Boncrist Farms Better Goods, Bernadotte Stables Dandolo, Guy De La Fregonnieres Abidjan, Kencal Stud Farms Abbezac, Frank Pia-rullis Count Cavour, Mrs. Ethel Jacobs Joe Jones, Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Maa-brook, Prisjoe Stables Nebullus, Happy Hill Farms Prince Regent, J. M. Roeblings South Point and Frank I. Wrights Sakr-el-Bahr.
