Everett Named General Manager at Las Vegas Resigns Posts at Santa Anita To Take Charge of Nevada Oval LAS VEGAS, Nev.. May 7.— Webb A. Everett, racing secretary and handicapper at Santa Anita since its inaugural meeting in 1934, has resigned to accept the posts of vice-president, executive general manager and director of the recently organized Las Vegas Racecourse. Lou Smith, president of the new Nevada plant, announced today that Everett has signed a five-year contract and will take over his duties immediately. The Las Vegas course will launch its first meeting Sept. 4. Smith, who also is vice-president and executive manager of Rockingham Park and was voted by the New York Turf Writers Association as the man who did the most for racing in 1947, stated, "We are very pleased to obtain the. services of Webb Everett, for whom we have the highest regard. Everett has been placed in complete charge of the entire operation with full authority." Everett has had a wide and varied background in racing. He assumes his duties at Las Vegas with a profound knowledge of racing in all its aspects. While racing secretary and handicapper, Everett entered the field of breeding. In 1948, when Joseph Schenck and his group purchased control of Del Mar, Schenck requested and received permission of Dr. Charles Strub, executive vice-president of Santa Anita, to have Everett serve as their general manager. In his four years in that capacity at Del Mar, the seaside plant attained the status of a major race track, and he also was responsible for the tracks now nationally acclaimed juvenile stakes, the Futurity and Lassie. "I am looking forward to my new position with the confdence that we shall make Las Vegas one of the fine race tracks of America," Everett said. "I have been very fortunate in having been associated with one of the finest tracks anywhere, Santa Anita, and I gained invaluable experience in all phases of race track operation while at Del Mar. With the high standards and aims that will govern our operation at Las Vegas, we feel that we shall make a definite contribution to American racing." Las Vegas plans to operate four days a week with spring and fall meetings totaling 100 days or more.* SANTA ANITA PARK. Arcadia, Calif., May 7. — The management of Santa Anita Park today wished its former racing secretary, Webb Everett, well in his new position but stated that so there will be no misunderstanding, the Los Angeles Turf Club, Inc.. has no financial interest in the Las Vegas track, nor any connection with its management or proposed operation.
