Bubbley Bubbley Has Has Eleven Eleven Artful Artful Rivals; Rivals; Grecian Grecian Queen, Queen, Canadiana Canadiana Clash Clash Equally Weighted " At 121 in Gazelle Coaching Club Oaks,Queens Plate Winners Meet Along With Hows Tricks, Sabette By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 23.— The fifty-eighth running of the Gazelle Stakes, one of Americas older fixtures for sophomore fillies, is" the feature attraction at Aqueduct tomorrow. Under the allowance conditions of the Gazelle, which is at a mile and a sixteenth for a 5,000 prize, Mrs. Ben P. Whitakers Grecian Queen and E. P. Taylors Canadiana must carry 121 pounds each, conceding eight pounds to their nine rivals. Grecian Queen comes from a courageous victory in the Coaching Club American Oaks, while Canadiana won the historic Queens Plate in her last outing at Woodbine. Eric Guerin will ride Grecian Queen, who may be favored, while-Dave Gorman will pilot the Canadian filly, who is regarded as the best yet developed north of the Border, though she was unplaced in her only stakes appearance in the United States last year, the Marguerite, at Pimlico. Trio Pegged at 113 Greentree Stables Hows Tricks, "Belair Studs Sabette and Howell E. Jacksons Ballerina all rate serious consideration under their 113-pound burdens. After finishing second to Ballerina in her first start of the year at Belmont Park, Hows Tricks scored two easy triumphs at six furlongs in excellent time. The daughter of Questionnaire from the stakes -winning Whats New reeled off three-quarters in 1:10% with her mouth wide open, then won just as easily in a little slower time. Ted Atkinson will again be in the saddle, and though the strapping chestnut filly has not been tried Continued on Page Forty-Six Grecian Queen Meets Canadiana in Gazelle Hows -Tricks, Sabette, Ballerina Also Well Regarded at Aqueduct Continued from Page One over a distance, it would not surprise if she became the public choice. Sabette, who will be coupled with Ogden Phipps His Duchess, finished four and a half lengths behind Hows Tricks in her last outing, while trying to concede four pounds. She had come off a distance race, having finished inches behind Grecian Queen in the CCA Oaks at a mile and three furlongs a week before. Sabette and Grecian Queen were at level weights in that stake. Jess Higley will pilot Sabette, who will be racing over her home track, while Nick Wall will guide His Duchess. Ballerina, who will be ridden by Warren Lane, was rather lucky to beat Hows Tricks in that fillys seasonal bow. The Greentree miss was coupled with My Sin, who was racing forwardly from the start, while Hows Tricks stayed back in the ruck. When My Sin tired abruptly in the stretch and Atkinson went to work on Hows Tricks, he found himself behind an impenetrable screen of horses and didnt find an opening until inside the sixteenth pole. The Gazelle field is completed by King Ranchs Script, Wally Schwabs Milspal, C. V. Whitneys Ming Yellow, C. T. Chen-erys Queens Moon and Velvet Acres Gains-boro Girl. Ming Yellow closed with a belated rush to be third in the CCA Oaks, two and a half lengths behind Grecian Queen and Sabette, while Script was a weaiy fifth after being with the leaders from the half-mile pole to the furlong pole. Milspal showed nothing in the Shevlin just yesterday, while Queens Moon comes from a dull sprint effort on Friday. Gainsboro Girl appears outclassed. . Highweights have won three of the last four editions of the Gazelle, Nell K., Next Move and Kiss Me Kate scoring under 121 pounds before Hushaby Baby surprised under 113 last year. The inaugural, which was at the old Gravesend course in 1887, went to J. B. Haggins mighty Firenze, while the first winner at Aqueduct was L. S. Thompsons Regret in 1917, who won the Kentucky Derby in 1915. Since then, it has gone to such memorable fillies as Bateau, Gold Seeker, Fairy Chant, Tangled, Vagrancy, Whirlabout and Ace Card, all of whom carried 121 pounds or more, with Vagrancy packing-126.
