♦ Senator Joe Back In Winning Form Leads Throughout Mile and Sixteenth Oak Lane Purse, With Roman Rocket Second DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 23. — Snapping a string of long-shot winners which had preceded him, Alan T. Clarkes Senator Joe this afternoon was an easy winner of the mide and one-sixteenth Oak Lans Purse in 1:44 flat. The .20 favorite with a crowd of 11,734 reported two lengths clear of Houghton P. Metcalf s Roman Rocket, with Bobby Mitchell "sitt-in and cookin." Third position was filled by Ralph E. Dutchers Promptness. Senator Joe, a homebred five-year-old son of Alaking — Bola Mowlee, has had trouble making the entries during the current meeting and has competed only in a pair of handicaps prior to the Oak Lane. He was beaten less than two lengths by Eatontown in the six-furlong Wilmington, then was less than three lengths behind Post Card in the mile and one-sixteenth Brandywine. The manner in which he scored todady would inricate that owner-trainer Clarke will continue to run him at distances of a mile or more on frequent occasions. Has Speed to Spare Mitchell sent Senator Joe to the front in the run to the first turn and there was never much doubt as to the outcome. Senator Joe turned back the mild bid of Rusty-Lyn Stables Lot-A-Brass leaving the back-stretch, increased his advantage to the furlong pole, then won with speed to spare despite his burdensome package of 123 pounds, which found him conceding 16 pounds to Roman Rocket. While he has no future engagements at this course, Senator Joe has been liberally "staked" through Monmouth Park and Atlantic City and it seems reasonable to surmise that he will be seen in action at those points. He now had won three of his six starts this year, including the Baltimore Spring Handicap, in which he was moved into the top spot through the disqualification of Jan Burkes Squared Away.
