Defeats Hoodwink In Aqueduct Battle Stewards Disallow Claim of Foul That Vanderbilt Filly Bothered Greentree Runner AQUEDUCT, Aqueduct, L. I., N. Y., June 23. — Alfred G. Vanderbilts Outsmart and Greentree Stables Hoodwink fought it out from start to finish of the featured Tok-alon Purse at Aqueduct today and the struggle continued after the favorite reached the wire a half length to the good, with Ted Atkinson claiming foul against Eric Guerin. Outsmart, on the outside, had Hoodwink in close quarters all through the stretch, but the patrol films didnt substantiate Atkinsons claim that he was interfered with near the wire and Guerin didnt appear to be doing anything illegal. David Shaers Neversink was only a head farther back in third place after going wide at the head of the stretch, while Claiborne Farms Blue Jeans finished fast to be a" half length out of the money. A crowd of 16,981 turned out to view the moderate program in bright, sunny weather, tempered by a pleasant breeze. Outsmart, however, was the first successful favorite of the afternoon, paying .90 after getting the six furlongs in a moderate 1 : 13 over, the fast, but safe, track. Pass Blue Jeans Quickly Blue Jeans was first away from her inside stall at the start of the Tokalon, but was quickly passed by Hoodwink, Outsmart, Confederacy, Sea Dawn and Neversink as she dropped back along the rail. Hoodwink drew oufrva length before Outsmart in the run to the far turn, as Neversink moved up rapidly on the outside, while having some trouble negotiating the sharp curves. Guerin started shoving on Outsmart Hearing the final curve and drew level with Hoodwink, while Neversink lost several lengths as she bore out. Hoodwink came into the stretch with Outsmart lapped on her and holding her too close for Atkinson to be able to employ his high-arcing swing with the whip. The two fillies fought it out bitterly through the long stretch, with Outsmart holding a head . lead to the finish end of the odds board. ! At that point, Hoodwink stumbled slightly on A ,Hr1f»er*Y* ttto c fmollw oV1a ir tic a T-iic? whip, and had to be gathered up as she passed under the wire. While this was going on, Outsmart edged away to win by a half length. Once straightened away, Neversink finished very fast on the outside, while Blue Jeans also closed with a determined rush after having to circle horses to find racing room. There was a freak accident in the hurdle race when Sanford* Farms St. Regis hit the hedge opposite the upper end of the grandstand and sent veteran jockey Jason Eaby sailing over his head. Eaby landed squarely on the bulging chest of Edward Downey, a massive Pinkerton, who was standing in the infield near the hedge, felling him with a flying tackle and knocking out his wind. Downey was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital, Jamaica, suffering from shock. Wise Que lost John Schweizer at the same hedge. Neither jockey was injured. Willie Jones charges ran one, two in the race, Mrs. Rea Wingfields Rewing scoring by a half length over his own Sea Defense.
