Oii fine Trot By MORRIE KURLANSKY 1 Sheldon Pointer Shows Good Speed Miss Abbe Cash Betters Own Record Clipper Hanover Racing in Sweden MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood, 111., June 23. — The emergence of Sheldon Pointer in the ranks of free-for-all pacers was the outcome of Saturday * MMfefe. nights exciting feature jjPlm race. "With Billy Rouse JIB" " „ in the sulky, the six- year-old gelding by Jp|H| Pegasus Pointer raced JH for most of the way in SB *ne secon SP°* behind fefHliilH the pacemaker True jm/nm Jay but had enough in kSp- Wm reserve to best this one ■k Hk. H by a neck in the good MB» m Ml time of 2:04%. TheVir-ginia Henson - owned pacer has now won five out of his nine races this year each time improving his record. Also True Jays effort was very laudable and since the time of a beaten .harness horse is not officially recognized the Melrose Park-owned pacer nevertheless proved that he can go the mile in 2:05. W. J. dingers three-year-old filly Miss Abbe Cash put on an exhibition of sheer pacing: speed in Saturday nights sixth » race, a class CC pace. Well rated off the pace by Edgar Leonard the daughter of Poplar Abbe had no match in this field when asked for speed around the final turn. With ground-devouring strides the game filly hit the wire in 2:06%, which is a new record for hen Together with Gene Jester, who won the two-year-old pacing division of the rich Illinois State Fair Colt Stakes last year from Knigjit Abbe and Miss Abbe Cash, the Aurora-owned and -bred filly looms as the strongest contender for main honors in the three-year-old division of tlje Springfield stake. Gene Jester won at Roosevelt Raceway recently in 2:06 for his Chicago owners, Paul Wixom and George Lutz, with Harry Fitzpatrick driving. The famous New York harness track, however, is about two seconds faster than the Maywood Park strip, which makes Miss Abbe Cashs win time all the more significant. By a strange coincidence the first four races at Maywood Park on Saturday were won by horses starting from the No. 5 post. The winner of the second race, Primrose Worthy Dan Peacock, however, was disqualified for bearing out in the stretch thus interfering with Lucia, who was declared the winner. . .With two more weeks to go Earl Roush and Ralph Ayou were on even terms in the win department, each one having steered 22 winners. . .On Saturday night six- horses lowered their previous best time for the year, namely Rocket Abbe to 2:10, Miss Hilbert to 2:08%, Miss Abbe Cash to 2:06%, Peggy Adam to 2:07, Sheldon Point-: er to 2:04%, and Czar Volo to 2:07%. Clipper Hanover 2:02%, who was sold last year by his owner A. D. Knapp, Jackson, Mich., after having won several races at Santa Anita and Maywood Park, made his first start in his new homeland Sweden a few weeks ago. The Nibble Hanover son not as yet used to the European starting method in both heats of the Kr. 50,000 0,000 Stockholm race broke stride leaving and trailed hopelessly beaten. The race was won by the Swedish mare Frances Bulwark with the Italian-owned American trotter Scotch Thistle second and the European record holder Permit 2:04%, a German-bred horse, third. At the famous Kentucky nursery two new foals arrived last week, both of whom carry special interest; One was from a mare full of years and honors both on the race track and in the breeding paddocks and the other from a mare reserved as a broodmare and having no carreer on the race track. First was Her Ladyship 1:56%, the Worlds Champion pacing mare and the other The Miss Morris, a daughter of Volomite and The Worthy Miss Morris 2:04. Her Ladyship, who was bred by Clair Wolverton, Indianapolis, Ind., currently having two horses here.in care of Stan Stucker, had a* baV filly by Scotland 1:59%, and the latter, a full sister to the Canadian-owned Mighty Cox, a winner of several races here this spring, had a black colt by Scotland. Her Ladyship in additition to her many feats on the track is now credited with the three fastest two-year-olds from one mare; namely Goose Bay 2, 2:02; Gosling 2, 2:02%; and Gander 2, 2:03.. There are no less than 19 eligibles for the Hambletonian Stake now trainings at Good Time Park, where the three-year ■» old blue ribbon classic will be contested August 12. Three of these are tied for the best workout times thus far with a 2:08 trip. They are the early favorite, Newport Star 2, 2:04%, the highly rated contender, Kimberly Kid 2, 2:05%, and Old Blue Hen, a full sister to the aforementioned Mighty Cox, 2, 2:06. If Del Cameron succeeds in winning with the Axomite colt from the Newport Stock Farm he will be the youngest reinsman to make the grade at 33. Tom Berry, who won the first Hambletonian raced at Goshen, has Kimberly Kid, while Frank Ervin, of Good Time fame, trains Old Blue Hen. Two members of the Illinois Harness Racing Commission were, interesting spectators at Maywood. R. A. Warren of East Moline brought along his family while H. J. Van Gundy and wife entertained Mr. and Mrs. Hungate, prominent Du Quoin auto dealer. . .Dr. and Mrs. Shapiro of Presbyterian Hospital were guests of Mitch Bernstein, loop attorney. . .Mr. and Mrs. Earl Treat, Chicago American editorial writer, picked a few winners with Tom Palmer, aluminum manufacturer, and Dorothy Garland. . .Max Gerber, of Gerber Industries, fully recovered from a recent hospital seige, relaxed with the misses in the clubhouse. . .Jason Hurley, sales manager of Magnavox television, compared notes with cousin Dick Hurley, president of Thor Power Tools.. .Mr. and Mrs. John ORiley, of Conley Associates, had as their guest Miss Betty James... J. A. "Moon" Mullins, chairman of the Cook County Zoning Board, and Emmitt Nolan, associated with Chicago and North Western R. R. out of Minneapolis, had an enjoyable night at the races.
