Tom Fool# Squared Away Impress in Carter Trials Former Goes Six Furlongs in 1 :32/s And Latter Seven-Eighths in 1 :24 BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 23. — Green tree Stables Tom Fool and Mrs. Jan Burkes Squared Aw,ay, who will be the topweights in Saturdays Carter Handicap, both trained impressively this morning for that 0,000 seven furlongs. Tom Fool, who must carry a crushing 135 pounds, was waved down by trainer John Gaver, though he was under a strong hold, after going six furlongs in 1:13%. The son of Menow was eased up a mile in 1:42. Working alone and with Ted Atkinson in the saddle, the Metropolitan and Suburban winner stepped the early stages of his prep in :24, :35%, :48 and 1:00 Vs. He was only breezing all the way, never being allowed to show his best speed. Atkinson also worked Greentrees Hall of Fame on the training track this morning and the Shut Out gelding showed speed for the first time this year, when he went a mile in 1:41 in handy style. Over at Jamaica, which has a new and somewhat slow surface, Squared Away stepped the seven-furlong distance of the Carter in a sparkling 1:24, accomplishing the prep in handy style. The Piping Rock gelding, who has 122 pounds to carry on Saturday, clicked off fractions of :46%, :58% and 1:115.
