Oil Capitol, Sub Fleet Vie With Calumet Derby Winner Baybrook, Ruhe, Eljay May * Cut Figures in Running of Arlingtons 0,600 Stake By J. J. MURPHY ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 26. — The presence of Hill Gail in the Equipoise Mile failed to frighten other trainers one whit, and as a result 15 of the best milers on the grounds will face the Calumet Farm star tomorrow. If all 16 go the race will gross 0,600, making it the richest-Equipoise ever run, and the net value to the winner will be 7,500. Hill Gail, the top weight with 128 pounds, has drawn a post position in the middle of the pack and will be ridden by jockey Eddie Arcaro. Inasmuch as the son of Bull Lea cracked a track record in winning his most recent race, his condition is of the best, and he will be a heavily played favorite. Regarded as Hill Gails most formidable foes are Oil Capitol and Sub Fleet, who follow him on the weight list with 117 and 116 pounds, respectively. Oil Capitol is "packaged" with three others in the Equipoise. He will have Big Stretch, Ruhe, and •Pomace as running mates. Oil Capitol and Big Stretch are owned jointly by the Hasty House Farm and Mrs. Harry Trotsek, and Ruhe and Pomace are the sole property of Hasty House. Oil Capitol seems to be a rather temperamental racer. He is either very good or vice versa. In his last try, which was at six and one-half furlongs at Lincoln-at-Hawthorne, he was soundly trounced by Unbridled, while Blue Licks and Bugle Drums finished in front of him. Highest Money Earner in Training On the other hand, Oil Capitol is capable of turning in a smasher which results in his now being the highest money earning thoroughbred in training. To date this season he has taken the Ben Ali Handicap at Keeneland, which was a three-horse race in which Breeze By fell, and Oil Capitol had only a stablemate, Seaward, to trim, the 00,000 Widener in which he numbered among his victims such "name" horses as Battlefield, Crafty Admiral, and Spartan Valor, and the Palm Beach Handicap in which he defeated such as Battlefield, Sagittarius, Eatontown, and other stakes winners at seven furlongs. Ruhe is a steady racer who does not have too much early speed, and the same goes for Big Stretch. Both were tried at Lincoln-at-Hawthorne, and Ruhe won the Lincoln Handicap and finished second to Eljay at six and one-half furlongs. Pomace was third to Baybrook, who is in the Equipoise Mile with 112, and beat him by over eight lengths. Sub Fleet and Hill Gail will be renewing their feud of the 1952 Kentucky Derby jn which the Dixiana colt was second. Following the Derby, Sub Fleet was third to Mark-Ye-Well and Armageddon in the Arlington Classic, second to Mark-Ye-Well in the American Derby, and won the Sheridan Handicap from Princess Lygia and Eljay. He has started but once this year, that in the recent Northwest Handicap here. Hill Gail, the winner, beat him by slightly over four lengths, but when his Continued on Page Forty-ThreQ MRS. GENE MARKEf-Her Calumet Farm has an opportunity to acquire permanent possession of the Whitney Challenge Cup today with Hill Gail in the Equipoise Mile, the stable having won the stake with Sun Again in 1944 and Fervent in 194and Sixteen Slated to Seek j Equipoise Mile Honors Hill Gail Has Oil Capitol, Ruhe Sub Fleet as Rivals at, Arlington r Continued from Page One lengthy respite from racing is taken into consideration that race was deemed good. Baybrook did well in short races at the Lincoln Fields session. He won the Steger and Edward Fleming Memorial Handicaps. However, when asked to go one and one-sixteenth miles in the Lincoln Handicap on the closing day of the meeting he tired and swerved after going seven furlongs, and was beaten by Ruhe, Sunny Dale and Adams Off Ox. Baybrook races for Mrs. J. L. Knight, and her son, L. J. Knight. In the second flight for the Equipoise seem to be Sam E. Wilson Jr.s Royal Mustang, the Apheim Stable - Gustave Smith 1 entry of Quiet Step and Handsome Teddy, Reverie Knoll Stables Smoke Screen and Golden Maxim Stables Eljay. The latter has been going well. He was third to Hill Gail and Princess Lygia in the Northwest and defeated Ruhe at the Lincoln meeting. Royal Mustang, who was second to Count Turf in the 1951 Kentucky Derbj, won the Stars and Stripes Handicap here last year. He was fifth in the Lincoln, third to Sunny Dale and Baybrook at one and one-sixteenth miles, and second to s Baybrook in the Edward Fleming Memorial. Smoke Screen won several stakes at New Orleans last winter, but after finishing second in a sprint at Lincoln, came back with a poor effort in the Lincoln Handicap in which he finished sixth. Quiet Step and Handsome Teddy both started in the Northwest Handicap, won by Hill Gail, and finished .eighth and tenth, respectively, in a 10-horse race. However, ; each is capable of doing better. Quiet Step won three stakes last year, including the rich Roamer Handicap at Jamaica. Handsome Teddy won the Chesapeake Stakes at Laurel and the Paul Revere Handicap at Suffolk last season. In the Chesapeake, he beat Jampol, who is also entered in the Equipoise Mile. Handsome Teddy has been working very well since his recent start. Others in the Equipoise field, aside from Jampol, are Coffee Money, Abbe Sting, and Whither. Jampol won the Leonard Richards Stakes, the Preakness Prep, and the Providence Stakes, at Narragansett last season, and wound up the year with earnings of over 00,000. Coffee Money won the Myrtlewood Handicap here last year, but has been beaten in all three races this season. Abbe Sting won a race at the Lincoln Fields session, and Whither was beaten in his only start here. Conn McCreary will be in from the East to ride Oil Capitol, while Johnny Adams will have the mount on Ruhe and William H. Cook will pilot Baybrook instead of Ken Church. Dodson will be aboard Quiet Step, Contreras on Coffee Money, Heck-
